Philadelphia Union finally got their man, and he’s the guest on the latest edition of the KYW Philly Soccer Show as new striker Fernando Aristeguieta joins with KYW’s Greg Orlandini and PSP’s Eli Pearlman-Storch.

The Venezuelan international comes to the Union on loan from FC Nantes of France’s Ligue 1, where he scored nine goals in 45 league games since joining the club 2013. He says the Union first targeted him in November to join the team. “El Colorado,” as he is known, says he is happy to come to the US and hopes to make his move to Philadelphia permanent.

Greg and Eli also talk about the Union’s other new signing, local product goalkeeper John McCarthy. The La Salle University grad will likely see playing time in his first MLS year, with Rais Mbolhi and Andre Blake both expected to be away from the Union on national team duty at times during the season.

  1. Not to pick on you guys, but his name is pronounced “Ah-rees-teh-gi-eh-ta”, with 6 syllables. In Spanish “gui” has the same sound as “key”, but with a hard “g”.

  2. Great interview. Made me that much more excited that we’ve signed him, beating out Seattle and the Cosmos. He said all the right things, and for a guy so young, the sky’s the limit. Let’s hope what he said, being here after this season, truly pans out.

The radio.com ads in the middle of these podcasts are a bit jarring. Maybe Greg can work on easing the listeners into them … gentler, kinder, less seizure-inducing.

    • Got to love his personal goal…

      • Eli Pearlman-Storch says:

Fantastic quote. If I was the Union, I would transcribe it and slap it on a billboard somewhere.

    • i love this podcast but i have to second the comment on that radio.com ad. it is so loud and so sudden i almost crashed my car into the median

      • Eli Pearlman-Storch says:

We apologize sincerely for the volume and abruptness of the ads. They are inserted by some one, or some robot, automatically. Not only do we have no control over their volume, but we also have no control over where they are placed. Rest assured that we are doing our best to try and figure out a better solution than having radio.com scream at you without warning.

  3. Very excited to see what Nando can do and hoping that he’s here beyond his loan. Columbus should be a good test tonight.

Also, to anyone interested in joining a private league on MLS fantasy, please let me know. It’s my first year doing it and I’d like some PSP followers to join me!

  4. Good interview. Nice to know that he would like to be here if ALL works out and the Union buy him. Just wondering though, do ask your guests how their name should be pronounced? Only asking because of the 2 of you asking each other if you pronounced the name correctly. Again good interview.

  5. I do not have audio on this device, but was the “Beardnando” nickname mentioned in the audio clip? That’s a great nickname, I hope it sticks.

  6. Awesome interview. I am excited about Nando; this dude eats goals for breakfast. I only saw about 15 mins of the game tonight, but in that time I witnessed Nado working his ass off making smart runs. His goal looked so easy…it will def be refreshing to have a player of confidence in Union Blue this season. Sapong and Nando are both great upgrades and our midfield is primed for break out seasons all around. I guess my concerns are with the quality and depth of the backline, but I am hoping Curtins pedigree can assist its cohesive growth. I really hope they can nail this contract dispute down and start the season on time
