KYW Philly Soccer Show: Kevin Miller

It’s the MLS preseason, and the word for the day is “fitness.” In the latest installment of the KYW Philly Soccer Show has an expert in that field.

KYW’s Greg Orlandini and PSP’s Eli Pearlman-Storch are joined by Philadelphia Union trainer Kevin Miller. Miller talks about working with the players in the preseason and explains in detail how players have an off-season program and how the team is using technology and sports science to get the most out of each player. You can check out Kevin’s fitness tips at his Goal Oriented blog on the Union website.

Greg and Eli then discuss the interview Eli did with Austin Berry that was published by PSP on Tuesday. The former Rookie of the Year has been in limbo with the team since last summer, losing his spot due to injury and illness. He was then informed, according to Berry, that he would no longer be in the team’s plans.

  1. I had never thought about how many change of directions that each player needs to make in soccer vs other sports and how taxing that can be on the player’s fitness/overall health.

Also, it sounds like the Union have made some investments in fitness analytics to help Kevin which is great to hear.

Thanks for digging deeper into some of these recent pod topics and helping to keep the off-season more interesting.

    • Whenever I take a break from playing and pick it back up the start stop actions result in lactic acidosis 5 minus in it seems and is unbelievable. It never goes away – cause as one becomes more fit you naturally begin to push a bit harder and work the new edge to its limit. Very much like basketball, yet basketball has many stoppages related to timeouts and fouls ect.

A world class workout. and once your legs are cooked, making even the simplest cut or 30M pass is difficult.

  2. Amid all the criticism of the franchise needing to catch up in terms of its staff and facilities, Kevin Miller continues to get high marks in every mention from players. Glad our boys have him.

    Warm em up, Doogie!!!
