A pair of rookies got their first start of the year for the Philadelphia Union, and we have one of them as our guest on the latest edition of the KYW Philly Soccer Show as Pedro Ribeiro joins KYW’s Greg Orlandini and PSP’s Eli Pearlman-Storch.

Ribeiro, along with goalkeeper Andre Blake (first pick overall in this past MLS draft), played in the Union’s 2-0 loss to the Houston Dynamo last Friday. Though a midfielder, Ribeiro got the start at forward.

Greg and Eli then look at the Union as they try to recover from a rough patch of their schedule, playing three games in seven days, including 120 minutes in the US Open Cup semifinal in Dallas.  (The Union’s Maurice Edu gets the Ironman award for playing in every minute of the Union games, plus an extra 45 in the All Star Game on August 6.

  1. The negativity and vitriol on these podcasts is beginning to be a bit much.

  2. As much as I actually like JC, I sincerely hope he does not get the nod as manager. He really needs time under a bonified mmanager. Ribeiro is a no brainer in the #10 spot behind Maidana. JC running Noguiera into the ground is not managing and strategizing. It’s desperate and tunnel visioned. Strictly from the Hackworth school of BS. Use Ribeiro and Fred until Maidana is ready and let Brown spell Casey. Hopefully the next big signings will finally address the weak left side and bring in a quality name striker.

    • yeah i think what is happening is the same thing that went wrong with hackworth. new guy comes in and has some success and then becomes deathly afraid of losing and the bizarre conservative tactics that come out of that lead to problems like riding nogueira and casey into the ground while being too unsure to play younger guys who need to be filling in for older guys when they need breaks

  3. i don’t know why you guys were poo-pooing the new training fields. we need them and now we are building them. unambiguously a good thing

    • Eli Pearlman-Storch says:

I don’t remember poo-pooing the training fields. I have poo-pooed how long it took to build them, but the fact that they’re finally under construction is a very good thing.
