With the regular season winding down, some teams have clinched a conference playoff spot while others have one last game to make it. For some conferences, this weekend concludes the regular season, while others are already done. For each conference below, we will look at how many teams make the playoffs and when those games will be played. For those conferences still playing, the number of teams who make the playoffs will be stated.
Look for a more-detailed post-season post and preview article for Monday. As always, let us know if we are missing something, or any other comments you might have.
Capital Athletic Conference
Conference play concluded Wednesday for the CAC. The CAC website has an article on who made the six-team playoff field, and the first-round matchups.
York (Pa.): Goals by Jake Hower and Austin Johnson lead York over Frostburg State 2-1.With the win, York clinched the No. 2 seed for next week’s conference tournament.
Wesley: The Wolverines concluded CAC play with a 3-0 loss to Salisbury, but still made it to CAC post-season play. They will take on Christopher Newport in the first round.
Penn St. Harrisburg: Despite going down 1-0 in the 17th minute, Penn St. battled back and took the lead on goals from Tommy Miller and James Bilger. With less than 15 minutes to play, Penn St. gave up an equalizing goal on an own goal. In overtime, Marymount capitalized and scored the game-winner 50 seconds into the second over-time period to prevail 3-2.
Centennial Conference
With conference play continuing Saturday, it is still up in the air who will make the post-season. The top five teams make the conference tournament. A breakdown of each round can be found here. The standings are tight, so almost anything could happen come Saturday.
Swarthmore: The Garnets gave up two goals in a three-minute period to Haverford and was dealt their first conference loss. Swarthmore’s Josh Keedy scored their lone goal in the 2-1 defeat. Swarthmore can still clinch home-field advantage for the Cenntenial Conference tournament with a win over F&M this weekend. The Fords’ win temporarily puts them in second place.
Dickinson: The Red Devils lost 4-0 to F&M. They conclude the regular season against Washington College on Saturday. Depending on how things play out, the Red Devils could fail to make the conference post-season play.
Commonwealth Conference
The top-five teams will reach the conference playoffs. Messiah and Elizabethtown have already clinched the No.1 and No.2 seed, respectively. Everyone else but Hood College is still in contention for a playoff spot, and the head-to-head tiebreaker will definitely be used to determine some seedings.
Messiah: The Falcons continued their perfect conference record with wins over Widener and Arcadia. Josh Wood’s 16th goal of the season started Messiah’s late scoring in their 3-0 win over Widener. Jeremy Payne and Danny Brandt added their own tallies in the win. On Wednesday, Ryan Lago’s 31st minute goal got the Falcons rolling. With Messiah up 2-0, Arcadia was awarded a rather soft penalty kick. To clarify, I don’t think it was soft merely because the call went against Messiah, but that the call was opposite of how the referee was previously calling the rather physical match. In the end, Alex Wells scored Arcadia’s lone goal in the 3-1 defeat.
Elizabethtown: The Blue Jays went down 2-0 against Lebanon Valley College before Zach Lee’s goal cut the deficit. In the end, the Blue Jays fell 2-1. On Wednesday, E-town clinched a playoff spot and the No. 2 seed with a 2-1 win over Lycoming. After E-town saved Lycoming’s penalty kick attempt, they were awarded their own and took advantage. Andrew Sandridge scored on the PK before Zach Hollinger scored the 59th minute game-winner. Lycoming scored a late goal to prevent the shutout.
Alvernia: After going down early to Hood, two second-half goals earned the Crusaders the 2-1 victory. Josh Wollaston scored on a penalty kick, before Alex Martryn scored the 83rd minute game-winner. On Wednesday, Alvernia fell to Albright in a thrilling 3-2 double overtime decision. Once again, Alvernia went down, but tied the game at 2-2 thanks to goals from Wollaston and Martryn. However, the Lions proved to be too much and scored in the 105th minute. For Alvernia to clinch a playoff spot, they need a tie or a win against Stevenson.
Lebanon Valley College: Despite Widener being winless so far in conference play, the Dutchmen fell 3-0 to the Pride.
Arcadia: After being kept scoreless for 78 minutes, Lycoming took the late lead, but Joseph Bertucci headed home the equalizer moments later. With the game now in overtime, the Knights were whistled for a foul in the box. Lycoming capitalized and won 2-1 over the Knights.
Widener: The Pride continue to be humbled. Currently 0-3-3 in conference play, Widener tied Arcadia 1-1, before losing 3-1 to Albright.
Freedom Conference
The top-four teams clinch a playoff spot with Eastern and Misericordia already securing a spot.
Eastern: The Eagles recorded their 11th clean sheet in a 5-0 win over Penn St. Abington. Four different players found the net with Jamie Bonner scoring twice.
Misericordia: Two first-half goals from Nick von Egypt and Derek Antonini lead the Cougars to a 2-1 win over FDU-Florham. On Wednesday, the Cougars earned a 1-0 non-conference win against Susquehanna.
Wilkes: The Colonels went down 2-0 in less than 15 minutes and couldn’t complete the comeback win against Manhattanville. In the end, Wilkes lost 3-2. Nicholas Patricia and Michael Turner scored in the loss.
Landmark Conference
Due to the government shutdown affecting Merchant Marine, the conference semifinals will take place Nov. 7 with the final on Nov. 9. For more details on the four-team playoffs and tiebreaker info, check out the conference’s detailed piece.
Susquehanna: Three different Crusaders scored in the 3-0 victory over Goucher.
Juniata: The Eagles played two games in two days due to Merchant Marine having to make up postponed games. On Saturday, Juniata lost 2-0 against Catholic before defeating USMMA 2-1 the next day. In the latter game, Nick Welt and Dane Azelex put Juniata up 2-0 nine minutes in.
Catholic: The Cardinals clinched a playoff spot in their aforementioned 2-0 win over Juniata.
Moravian: The Greyhounds stayed winless in conference play in their 3-0 loss to Merchant Marine.
New Jersey Athletic Conference
The six-team conference playoffs has been set. For game times and other details, check it out here.
Rutgers-Camden: Rutgers reached many program highs in their 5-0 win over New Jersey City. Among them, Mike Ryan’s hat-trick led Rutgers to an undefeated regular season and the program’s best regular season record.
Stockton: Stockton finished conference play with two-straight loses. They lost 4-2 Saturday against Montclair St. before falling 3-1 on Wednesday against Rutgers-Newark.
Rowan: The Profs’ second-half lead didn’t hold as TCNJ knocked off Rowan in the second overtime period, 2-1.
National Scene
The second regional rankings of the 2013 season were released this week. The next regional rankings will come out Nov. 6.
