  1. Ed- I must say thanks for this. I haven’t checked to see whether you include the college women’s games that are broadcast, and are so important to those of us with daughters that play. Nevertheless, I am amazed to see the number of chances to watch this game, when I compare it to the old days of Soccer Made in Germany, too late for any kids to watch on Sunday nights except when Monday wasn’t a school day. Look at the number of reasonably available channels that carry this game and, even setting aside the pay-per-view channels and limited access channels that most of the cable providers don’t carry, the opportunity to see reasonable quality soccer is there. When you add the fact that even Barca’s B side is being broadcast on weeks when the A side is blacked out, I am amazed. I wrote in when one of your commentators had done a column on youth soccer, and asked why it is that kids will play, but not watch and learn the game; looking at this, it clearly isn’t because they can’t find one to watch. Thanks again.

My pleasure! There are several women’s college games in the listings, available through FSC, Fox Soccer 2Go and ESPN3 if I remember correctly.

Soccer Made in Germany – those were the days (and where would my soccer love had been without it). We use the old SMIG closing music as the closing music for PSP’s videos!

  3. Yup.. sitting with my Dad watching SMIG….

“And the ball is in the baaaccchhhh of the net!”

  4. All of that does come back, along with the strange feeling that soccer games are actually only three or five minutes long, wih all kinds of goals and shots on goal. My own father tried to understand my fascination with it, but never got the idea that “nil, nil” could be a good outcome. Even today, I think that only a complete soccer nut, or maybe a fullback well past his playing days, can appreciate that type of outcome.
