La Salle goalkeeper John McCarthy has been named Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. McCarthy’s accomplishments include 5 shutouts and 56 saves over the first 10 games of the season. He earned 2 clean sheets this past week with a 0-0 draw at UMBC on Tuesday night and a 1-0 win at Saint Peter’s on Saturday. Senior midfielder Zach Turchi scored the Explorer’s only goal against the Peacock’s in overtime. La Salle remains the Philly Soccer Six defensive leader with fewest goals allowed (8 goals in 10 matches).

Villanova earned a 1-0 win on Tuesday with a Kyle McCarthy goal in the 42nd minute against Temple. The win means that for the second season in a row, Nova will share in the Philly Soccer Six title. The Wildcats opened Big EAST conference play on Saturday against nationally ranked University of South Florida. The home match ended in a 1-1 overtime draw with Villanova’s sole goal coming from Hayden Harr in the 84th minute. The Wildcats continue to hold the Philly Soccer 6 overall best record at 7-2-1.

Penn’s Travis Cantrell scored his 4th goal of the season in a 2-1 loss at Drexel on Wednesday night. The Quakers traveled to Ithaca, NY on Saturday to kick off Ivy League conference action against nationally ranked Cornell. Penn midfielder Louis Schott scored in the 12th minute. The Big Red responded with a 3 goal blitz at the end of the first half. Cantrell scored in the 63rd minute, but the Quakers couldn’t avoid the loss. Penn fell to Cornell 2-3 at Charles F. Berman Field. The Quakers now have the undesirable distinction of being the Philly Soccer Six school with the most goals allowed (26) while holding the scoring top spot (22 goals in 10 matches).

Drexel faced city rival Penn on Wednesday night in front of 305 fans at Vidas Field. The Dragons struck first with a goal from Nathan Page in the 10th minute. Penn responded 2 minutes later to level the match. Drexel midfielder Ken Tribbett broke the tie in the final minutes with a goal off an assist from Brandon Zeller, earning the 2-1 home win for the Dragons.

The Dragons opened CAA conference action on Friday night with a strong road performance over William and Mary. Drexel saw goals from Guido Pena, John Grosh and Nathan Page. The Dragons shut out the Tribe 3-0 at Martin Family Stadium in Williamsburg, Virginia. Drexel defender Tim Washam was named Philly Soccer Six Defender of the Week, along with La Salle’s John McCarthy and Villanova’s Kyle McCarthy.

Saint Joseph’s chalked up 2 road wins and honors for freshman Tim Lazorko who has been named Atlantic 10 Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week and Philly Soccer Six Rookie of the Week. Lazorko scored the 1-0 game winner against the Bucknell Bison on Tuesday night. On Saturday afternoon, Lazorko struck again with a goal against the Loyola Greyhounds. Sophomore Jake Nelson scored the game winner with a final score of 2-1 over Loyola, earning him the Philly Soccer Six Player of the Week nod.

Temple stared the week off with a 1-0 loss to Villanova. The Owls bounced back with a 2-0 shutout at Rider. Freshman Jared Martinelli scored both Temple goals off assists from junior Vaughn Spurrier.
