Union add 2002 MLS MVP Carlos Ruiz

The Philadelphia Union officially signed former MLS Most Valuable Player Carlos Ruiz before departing for Greece. Ruiz arrives on a free transfer from Aris FC. He has scored 82 goals over 155 games in his MLS career.

Ruiz gives Peter Nowak another offensive option to support Danny Mwanga and Sebastien Le Toux. The Guatemalan is a proven MLS goalscorer whose bicycle kick was named MLS Goal of the Decade for the 2000s.

He will compete with Jack McInerney, Chris Agorsor and Levi Houapeu for playing time behind the probable top two.

Ruiz’s output dropped off significantly after he lit up MLS for over 20 goals his first season. He never topped 15 after that and had trouble finding a home in the league. He returns to MLS after a brief stint in Greece with Aris, a club that also featured Freddy Adu and Eddie Johnson last year.

The Union also announced that Chris Agorsor will wear #12, Zac MacMath will wear #18, and Michael Farfan will wear #26.

Do you have any thoughts on the Ruiz signing? After getting shut out by Orlando City, it can’t hurt to add firepower, right?

  1. VIVA DOS CHOOCH!

  2. They needed a Forward who could replace Moreno and hopefully be more dangerous in the box, they have seemed to find that.

  3. He’s a poacher. Of the strikers on staff, I think Jack Mac as the most similar skillset and should learn a lot from Deuce Chooch.
