The Philadelphia Union return to Subaru Park on Saturday, October 17, for a Kids’ Day matinee against Charlotte FC in a pivotal Eastern Conference showdown. Now sitting sixth in the Eastern Conference with 45 points, Philadelphia is just one point behind fifth-place Charlotte, making Saturday’s meeting an opportunity to leapfrog another playoff contender.

Scouting Report: Charlotte FC

Charlotte FC arrives at Subaru Park with plenty at stake; sitting fifth in the Eastern Conference with 46 points, The Crown could secure a postseason berth with a win, while a draw could be enough depending on other results around the league.

However, Charlotte will be looking to bounce back after a frustrating 3-1 defeat to the Columbis Crew on Wednesday. Idan Toklomati gave The Crown an early lead in the 17th minute, but the Crew equalized before halftime and scored twice in quick succession during the second half to claim all three points.

Despite the midweek setback, Charlotte possesses plenty of attacking firepower. Toklomati has been in excellent form, recording three goals and an assist across his previous two matches. The 22-year-old forward has reached 12 goals this season, matching the club’s single-season MLS scoring record previously set by Karol Świderski. Pep Biel has also reached 12 goals, giving Charlotte two players capable of punishing defensive mistakes. Biel has added 12 assists, bringing his total to 24 goal contributions in what has been the most productive season of his MLS career.

With two dangerous attackers leading the way, Charlotte will look to exploit opportunities in transition and put pressure on Philadelphia’s backline. However, the visitors will need a much stronger defensive performance than the one they produced against Columbus. Allowing the Union’s attack to find space in and around the box could make for a long afternoon, particularly given Philadelphia’s current scoring form.

Scouting Report: Philadelphia Union

The Union are playing some of their best soccer of the season at exactly the right time. The attacking production has been a defining feature of Philadelphia’s resurgence. The Union have outscored their opponents 41-16 during their 14-match unbeaten run, with Iloski providing the finishing touch and homegrown midfielder Cavan Sullivan emerging as one of the league’s most dangerous creators. Sullivan recorded his 14th assist of the season against Chicago, setting a new MLS single-season record for goal contributions by a teenager with 21.

Perhaps most impressively, Philadelphia has demonstrated that it can overcome adversity. The Union have won five matches this season after trailing at halftime, with four of those comeback victories coming under Richter. That resilience could prove crucial against a Charlotte side fighting for its playoff position. With the home crowd behind them, the Union will look to extend their winning streak to nine matches and continue their climb toward a higher postseason seed.

Matchup to Watch: Philadelphia’s Attack vs. Charlotte’s Defense

Saturday’s biggest battle could come down to whether Charlotte can contain Philadelphia’s increasingly dangerous attack. The Union have scored freely throughout their unbeaten run, combining Iloski’s finishing ability and Damiani’s recent scoring surge with Sullivan’s creativity and the contributions of their other young players.

The Crown will have to account for Philadelphia’s ability to generate opportunities from multiple positions. With Iloski, Damiani, and others contributing to the scoring, focusing exclusively on one attacking threat will not be enough. Charlotte’s defensive organization and ability to limit opportunities inside the box will be essential.

Player to Watch: Cavan Sullivan

Sullivan has become a central figure in Philadelphia’s attacking resurgence, using his vision, creativity, and confidence on the ball to unlock opposing defenses. His ability to find teammates in dangerous positions has helped elevate the Union’s attack, and his connection with Philadelphia’s forwards will be especially important against a Charlotte side that has conceded three goals in each of its last two matches.

Prediction: Philadelphia 3-1 Charlotte FC

Charlotte has enough attacking quality to find the net, particularly with Toklomati and Biel in form, but its defensive struggles against Columbus raise questions about its ability to contain Philadelphia’s multifaceted attack. Expect the Union to create plenty of chances, with Sullivan pulling the strings and Iloski and Damiani continuing to lead the scoring charge.

  1. In his pregame presser Richter said both Jean Jacques and Anello would be available and that Bueno was out with a hamstring.
