Player Ratings: Chicago Fire FC 1-3 Philadelphia Union

Philadelphia’s 3-1 comeback victory over the Chicago Fire was a tale of two halves. The Union struggled to find the breakthrough before halftime and conceded first, but Jack Elliott’s red card seemed to give the Boys in Blue the opening the needed.

Bruno Damiani and Milan Iloski took full advantage after the break, while Cavan Sullivan continued to make his mark with a goal contribution and another assist. The Union’s attacking prowess ultimately proved too much for Chicago as Philadelphia extended its winning streak to eight consecutive MLS matches.

Player Ratings

Andre Blake — 7

Blake conceded Chicago’s opening goal, but otherwise provided a steady presence. His late saves, including a three-shot sequence in the 83rd minute, helped prevent the Fire from ever building any momentum for a comeback.

Kai Wagner — 7

A shaky start, but Wagner provided an important outlet down the left, keeping pressure on Chicago. He remained composed as the Union took control in the second half and as always, contributed to Philly’s set-piece opportunities.

Neil Pierre — 6

Great hustle early on, helping disrupt Chicago’s attacking combinations and prevent any promising runs from developing. However, a late pair of fouls and a 90th-minute yellow card took some shine off an otherwise decent defensive performance.

Nathan Harriel — 7

Harriel helped the Union’s backline settle after a difficult opening half and did his part to keep Chicago from finding a way back into the match.

Frankie Westfield — 8

Westfield was energetic from the opening whistle, getting forward to create shooting opportunities while also making an important defensive block in the first half. His determination to keep the ball alive during Iloski’s equalizer earned him an assist, capping a strong two-way performance.

Jesus Bueno — 6.5

Bueno worked hard in the midfield and helped protect the defense, including blocking a dangerous Robert Lewandowski attempt in the 13th minute. He offered some attacking ambition with a long-range effort before halftime, although Philadelphia’s midfield looked more settled after his substitution.

Jovan Lukic — 8

Lukic provided a composed presence in midfield and capped his performance with a perfectly timed assist for Damiani’s second goal of the night.

Cavan Sullivan — 9

The younger Sullivan was instrumental in the turnaround, assisting Damiani’s go-ahead goal with a clever backheel and consistently looking to create danger around the box.

Quinn Sullivan — 7

Sullivan brought energy and attacking intent to the midfield, testing Chicago’s defense and getting an early second-half shot on target. His work rate helped Philadelphia sustain pressure after the break, even if he didn’t register a goal contribution himself.

Bruno Damiani — 10

Damiani was the difference maker, scoring twice to complete the Union’s comeback and putting the game out of reach with a superb long-range finish. He also assisted Iloski’s equalizer, giving him three goal contributions on the night and extending his scoring run to eight goals in six games.

Milan Iloski — 9

Iloski kick-started the comeback with his 18th goal of the season and played a role in Damini’s go-ahead strike. His movement and persistence kept Chicago under pressure and his continued Golden Boot challenge makes him a major part of Philadelphia’s attacking success.

Substitutes

(56′) Indiana Vassilev — 6.5

Vassilev entered as Philadelphia began to take control of the match and helped provide fresh legs in midfield. He contributed to the Union’s effort to manage the advantage, although a late yellow was an avoidable blemish.

(80′) Ezekiel Alladoh — 6

Alladoh came on to give Damiani a rest and help Philadelphia see out the result. He drew a free kick in stoppage time, but his limited minutes didn’t provide much opportunity to make a major attacking impact.

(80′) Ben Bender — 6

With the Union holding a two-goal lead, Bender’s primary task was to maintain control and help see the match through rather than force additional attacking chances.

(90’+2) Japhet Sery Larsen — N/A

(90’+2) Malik Jakupovic — N/A

Geiger Counter

REF — Ricardo Fierro — 6

The referee’s performance was marred by a couple of questionable decisions, particularly the discussion surrounding one potential handball that went uncalled. While Elliott’s second yellow card was a pivotal moment in the match, the missed handball decision raised concerns about consistency and the overall standard of officiating.

Richter Scale:

Ryan Richter – 8.5

Richter deserves credit for how the Union responded after going behind just before halftime, with his team scoring three unanswered goals after the break. His side made excellent use of the numerical advantage, and his substitutions helped manage the workload during a demanding three-game stretch in eight days.

Player of the Match: Bruno Damiani

Damiani gets the nod after directly contributing to all three Philadelphia goals. His brace, clever involvement in Iloski’s equalizer, and outstanding finishing made him the decisive figure in the comeback. With eight goals in his last six games, he’s giving the Union a prolific attacking presence at exactly the right time.

What’s Next…

The Boys in Blue wrap up a three-game in eight day stretch this weekend in front of the Union faithful as they host Charlotte FC at Subaru Park on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 PM.

One Comment

  1. The one score I would quibble with is Caven. Yes, he did have the assist, but even he felt he had a subpar night. From the article on MLS.com: “I played sort of terrible tonight, so I’m not really focused on any records or stats like that, to be honest,” Sullivan said.
    .
“I’m happy with the win, but I’ve sort of got to look in the mirror and watch some film and see what I have to do better. I’m not really happy with my personal performance, but, like I said, great win.”
    .
I would probably flip his score upside down and call it a 6.
