The Philadelphia Union looked to continue their winning streak post-World Cup against second-place Inter Miami and Lionel Messi at Subaru Park on Wednesday night, and move within striking distance of playoff-position in the standings.
The fireworks started early when Indiana Vassilev put a Frankie Westfield cross intended for teammate Bruno Damiani that just missed his head into the box in the 11th minute to give the Union a 1-0 lead. Miami would answer back with goals from Daniel Pinter in the 21st minute and Lionel Messi in the 26th minute to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Union would level the score at 2-2 off a header from Neil Pierre off a free kick from Milan Iloski in the 58th minute and thought they took the lead off an Iloski shot from a Pierre headed cross in the 62nd minute, but Pierre was ruled to have been offside in the build up by VAR.
Fireworks erupted among the players in the final minutes of stoppage time after Quinn Sullivan was taken down in the box and Inter Miami’s Ian Fray stepped on and over him, leading Quinn to tackle him and his brother Cavan to run into the ensuing fray. Cavan was shown a red card for his defense of his brother, along with Inter Miami’s Yannick Bright.
The Union left with a point and their best performance against Inter Miami in the Messi era in the books.
