After beating their 2024 points total earlier in the week, the Philadelphia Union continues on the road to face the Columbus Crew for the second time in 2025. Their previous meeting at Subaru Park ended with a late equalizer from the Crew’s Sean Zawadski, and the Boys in Blue will be eager to take home all three points.

Scouting Report: Columbus Crew

Since the last matchup between these two teams on May 10, the Crew has two wins, two losses, and three draws in seven matches. Their starting keeper, Patrick Schulte, recently suffered an abdominal injury while on international duty with the United States. Second string Evan Bush has one clean sheet and two goals against in three matches. In his last two starts against Vancouver and Atlanta, Bush faced five shots on target and made two saves. Overwhelming him and the Columbus back line with attacking pressure, and importantly, shots on target, may expose weakness in the 39-year-old keeper.

Head Coach Wilifred Nancy is one of the best in the league. He has a keen eye for weaknesses in his opponents and will no doubt apply tactics to expose the Union’s depleted defensive line.

  • Player Availability: Cesar Ruvalcaba– Ankle, Malte Amundsen– Knee, Patrick Schulte– Abdominal, Rudy Camacho– Thigh

(Note: at the time of writing, MLS’s official player availability report is not yet available).

Scouting Report: Philadelphia Union

With this past Wednesday’s victory over the Chicago Fire, the Union has surpassed its points total from last season while also tying for the fifth-fastest team to reach 40 points (post-shootout era), doing so in only 19 matches.

Jakob Glesnes is suspended due to yellow card accumulation, both Frankie Westfield and Olivier Mbaizo are injured, and Nathan Harriel is on international duty. Logic would suggest an MLS debut for at least Neil Pierre in this situation, but it could be argued that Union II captain Nick Pariano has proven himself enough at right back to relieve Alejandro Bedoya, who played 90 minutes on Wednesday for his first start at the position. If Bedoya is fit to go again, great, but there are capable options on the bench if necessary.

The Union is the best away team in MLS this season, averaging 2.2 points a match on the road, on top of its current eleven-game unbeaten streak. We have seen Bradley Carnell’s side grind out plenty of hard-fought away points this season, and even with the long list of absences due to international duties and injuries, there is no reason for them not to get at least a point out of this fixture.

As a note, both Danley Jean-Jacques and Andre Blake were grouped with their nations in the CONCACAF Gold Cup and are eligible for selection. Tai Baribo is safely out of Israel with his wife, but is still dealing with the injury that kept him out of play with his national team. Carnell believes Columbus may be “too soon” for a return.

  • Player Availability: Jakob Glesnes– Yellow card accumulation, Francis Westfield– Ankle, Ian Glavinovich– Knee, Mikael Uhre– Adductor, Tai Baribo– Leg, Olivier Mbaizo– Groin, Nathan Harriel– International Duty, Quinn Sullivan– International Duty

Key Matchup: Olwethu Makhanya vs Diego Rossi

With Jakob Glesnes suspended for yellow card accumulation, Olwethu Makhanya will need to step up as the more senior of the center back pairing to take charge against a strong Columbus attack led by Diego Rossi, who has nine goals on the season. No matter who his counterpart beside him will end up being, Makhanya will need to stay home and keep focused on his surroundings so that Columbus is less effective on the counterattack.

Player to Watch: Daniel Gazdag

The Union’s all-time leading goalscorer has yet to put one in the net for Columbus. He’s had plenty of chances, but has yet to put them on target.  Being in front of new fans against his old team might be enough to motivate him in the right direction.

Prediction: 2-1 Philadelphia

It would be a disaster if Philadelphia fails to get a point out of this match. There is also an itch to say this match ends 1-1, but for the sake of excitement, we will stay optimistic about another road win and the points taken from Columbus.

I assume you meant to write that it “wouldn’t” be a disaster if the Union failed to get a point, given how depleted they are.

Normally when they are this shorthanded, I would say park the bus and play for the 0-0 draw, but given that they only have two defenders with any MLS experience, and one of those is a rookie, even that will be hard to do. Plus they are without two of their top scorers. This one has disaster written all over it and the Union should be happy if they get a point.
    .
It’s a shame that the Union can’t tell the USMNT to either put Harriel in the lineup or send him back to the team, especially since this isn’t an official FIFA window. The Union should be rooting for Costa Rica to pull the upset tomorrow.
