A Score Card for Friday’s friendly

Because this is the age of IT, social media, and cellphones, for most PSP readers by now it is no longer breaking news that the Philadelphia Union’s preseason friendly with FC Cincinnati Friday at 5:00 PM in Clearwater at the DiMaggio Complex will be livestreamed on the Union’s website.

But at this writing there has been no official announcement updating who is in Florida with the team, as contrasted with who went to Spain. Below we try to provide that information.

Careful observation of photographs and video on the official Philadelphia Union sites on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram allows the unofficial Score Card that follows below.

We grouped players by positions as best we can guess them. As we have tried to suggest, the midfield will probably see the greatest positional interchange by individual players, closely followed by the strikers.

Since it is preseason, conditioning, i.e., the accumulation of game minutes, is the most fundamental purpose of the friendly. So we provide a column to record that detail. (Typos are deliberate to make the layout work.)

Instagram photos and video confirm that recently announced Serbian midfielder Jovan Lukic is already in Florida with the team and that his uniform number is almost certainly “4.”

Late Additions from coach Carnell’s Thursday press conference

He listed Nathan Harriel, Ian Glavinovich, and Olivier Mbaizo as not yet able to participate fully in full-team training activities due to various injuries. He either stated or implied for each that they are not ready to play against Cincinnati.

He described Jovan Lukic as “a ball-winning six.” He mentioned Danley Jean Jacques and Jesus Bueno as others at the position. He specifically mentioned a “double pivot” at one point.

He mentioned Tuesday’s Union II scrimmage against Rhode Island FC. He is the first Union organization official to mention the match’s occurrence, saying that some first teamers had played in it. And he mentioned Union II’s simultaneous presence in Clearwater and the collaboration between the two sides.  It sounds as though the relationship between the two will be “business as usual.”

Finally, when asked who has stood out in training so far, he said there were 29 or 30 players in camp and that all of them had been doing very well.

Tim, great work as usual. So little Union press coverage, I appreciate the in-depth dive you take. Keep up the nice work.
