“What I can promise is that we will definitely add some players in addition to the one we did already, that we will utilize all the mechanisms or the possibilities the league gives us according to our new rules. But we also trust in what we have, and that’s not only just the players we are bringing up from the second team. I think that we have a way better roster, and we can get way more out of it than we showed in the last season.”   —Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner as reported by the Inquirer’s Jonathan Tannenwald

Union preseason starts in less than two weeks. With the above quote from Ernst Tanner in mind, three issues should resolve themselves in the next several days, now that new head coach Bradley Carnell has been announced.

  • An addition at striker. An international U22 slot is open and possible.
  • An addition in the midfield. An international U22 slot is open and possible.
  • Is Brandan Craig still in negotiations? It appears he may have cleared waivers unclaimed.

We think it helpful to provide a depth chart of the players we know to be under contract to the Philadelphia Union  for 2025. We add one other who is almost a certainty to join as a Homegrown.

Down the chart’s right side we list the 2025 DPs, U22s, and Internationals to date.

In a second chart below that mirrors the first, we list the 2024  annualized based salaries of the players. 2025 salaries will not be known to the general public until about a month after the Primary Transfer Window closes towards the end of April. The mirror chart gives an idea of salary investment by individual position and general area of the expected formation.

We list three goalkeepers, eight defenders, 11 midfielders, and five strikers for 27 total players, pending two more possible additions as mentioned above. We anticipate that deep reserves will get developmental game minutes with Philadelphia Union II in MLS NEXT Pro as in past years, practicing with the first team, “up” as it were, but playing games “down.”

*New contract for 2025

There is a rumor on the Internet that Ian Glavinovich’s loan fee may be $350,000, and that his transfer fee purchase price might be $3,000,000. Hector Cabrera is named as the source through Jose Roberto Nunez.

  1. Ernst Tanner – I need salary flexibility. Also Ernst Tanner – we are going to pay the backups at RB and RM over 300k on contracts signed this offseason. Brilliant!

Unless the club can sell McGlynn to bring in real $$ via transfer fee, nothing of consequence will be spent on the roster. Plenty will be spent, however, on The Facility.

I do want to say thank you for the articles, the analysis is well done and appreciated. The frustration in the comments are directed solely at Union FO.

  2. John P. O'Donnell says:

It seems like a backup right back for Wagner if he leaves with Harriel moving to starting left back.
Possibly a striker using the U22 designation make sense as they could use more depth there.
    .
Moving forward with a more pressing style of play makes Jack McGlynn seem out of place and a reason to move him now more than ever. His value might go down in this system. The player who might benefit the most is Quinn Sullivan. Turns 21 in March with a new contract and can run all day. He is perfect for this system and might get a chance to play some games with his little brother which should be interesting.
