It’s official: Philadelphia Union’s Alejandro Bedoya, Chris Pontius, and Keegan Rosenberry have been called for Bruce Arena’s first training camp since replacing Jurgen Klinsmann as head coach.

The camp, taking place at the National Training Center in Carson, Calif., opens on Jan. 11 and concludes with friendlies against Serbia on Jan. 29 in San Diego, and against Jamaica on Feb. 2 in Chattanooga, setting up the possibility that the Union trio could face their teammate Andre Blake.

In a Facebook Live chat on Dec. 16, Arena said Pontius and Rosenberry would be among those players getting new looks during the camp.

This will be the first national team camp for Rosenberry, who just finished his first MLS season. Pontius has been called up for two previous camps, the last time in 2011, but remains uncapped. Bedoya is a national team regular, having so far earned 55 caps representing the US.

Arena said in a statement, “With games at the end of the month and the World Cup Qualifiers in March, this is going to be a critical time for us. It’s important that we come in and quickly establish an understanding of what we are about and how we go about building our team. As for the players, we are coming into this with an open mind, so it’s a huge opportunity for them.”

  1. Old Soccer Coach says:

Only MLSers and unattached but previously with MLS. Players from other leagues that are actively playing will join in later to integrate in for the various games, I would guess. So this is the MLS off-season audition.

  2. Good experience for Rosenberry… BTW, USA Soccer’s website says the Jamaica friendly is on February 3rd.
