Who’d have thought? Three games into the MLS season and Philadelphia Union are tied for first place in the Eastern Conference with 6 points in the standings, and the latest edition of the KYW Philly Soccer Show is here to break it all down for you.

KYW’s Greg Orlandini and Kevin Kinkead of CBS Philly, Philly Voice, and PSP talk with Union striker CJ Sapong, whose first half brace in Sunday’s home opener at Talen Energy Stadium powered the Union past the New England Revolution, 3-0.

Sapong talks about the physical battle he had against New England’s defenders throughout the match. He also talks about the team’s improvement in the areas of training and sports science, and how he feels stronger and better prepared compared to last season.

Greg and Kevin then look at the Union’s depth, especially in the midfield. They team has gotten off to a strong start with both Maurice Edu and Tranquillo Barnetta out with injuries, and Vincent Nogueira only playing in the team’s season opening defeat at Dallas. Chris Pontius and Ilsinho are among those who have stepped up to contribute in the Union’s early games.

We went from “RADIO!!!” to “Blackheads…”

Honestly, an improvement. At least the blackheads aren’t screaming at me.

Where is Eli, btw? I miss his high pitched complaining. It always amused me.

    • Thanks for listening. I’ve mentioned before, the ads aren’t something we can control. They are added afterwards by CBS. Eli is alive and well, just some scheduling issues for him right now.

      • sitting through the ads is more than worth it imo

I agree. I’ll listen to them for a great, free podcast. I didn’t mean to sound like I’m complaining. I was just noting that the ad finally changed to something that doesn’t startle me and make me spill my coffee on my drive to work.

        Keep up the good work.

      • I did not take it as complaint, just like keeping the listeners informed. It frustrates me a bit because it just happened I wasn’t told til after the fact, by listeners. As always thanks for tuning in!

      • You are too kind.

Greg, you mentioned you didn’t understand MLS scheduling and why there is a bye week coming up. Kevin touched on the reason and the real question is why there are 6 teams that DON’T have a bye week. MLS should shut down for international breaks like the upcoming one. Is it really fair to New England to have to play without Nguyen this weekend? Would we be happy if the Union played given that Blake isn’t available?

    • No No No…let’s play during the International breaks .. trust me MLS knows what it’s doing… and it is singularly important to stand out as its own product and governing force operating outside the international space satellites that communicate with the rest of the world… oh and in case you forget… having three games in hand on four other teams by august is —— good planning too.
      .
ssshhh… you can trust them… they are good at this. No No, really… haven’t you read.
      .
Andy… these are dangerous questions you ask… it is best to just accept….shhhh, its all good. It’ll be O.Kay… this league of Fake Plastic Trees.

“It wears me out. It wears me out.”

    • I agree, you either have to one thing or the other. Having a partial shutdown or whatever you wanna call just doesn’t make sense. And later in the year you will have a stretch of 3 games in 7 days or something like that. Oh well, MLS…
