Philadelphia Union announced on Tuesday the signing of 2016 SuperDraft pick Cole Missimo.

Union Sporting Director Earnie Stewart said in a statement, “We have really been encouraged by the young class we have assembled this offseason and Cole is an important piece to that. He will provide the kind of depth on the wing that we value here and we have the confidence he will harness his potential into developing into the player we know he can be.”

The midfielder, 23, was selected from Northwestern University in the fourth round of the 2016 draft, No. 64 overall.

Missimo joins fellow 2016 draft picks Joshua Yaro, Keegan Rosenberry, Fabian Herbers, and Taylor Washington on the Union roster.

The article clearly states who he is. Unless you’re being sarcastic and complaining about bringing in a depth piece who will likely end up at BSFC anyway….

  2. Old Soccer Coach says:

James, he scored the second goal against Chicago, did not play against Tampa Bay. I am a little surprised because, like PhilaDOOPlan, I thought he would be signed by BSFC outright rather than the Union, but Earnie Stewart sees something he likes we can all conclude.

He will not affect the Salary Cap as he is young enough and they have a few slots open for non-senior roster players under the Cap, so I guess that his signing does not bear on whether or not they decide to ink Ilsinho.

I am still waiting for the shoe to drop about Ken Tribett; he will be non-senior roster as well and will not affect salary cap considerations, I think.

  3. Their website says they signed Tribett.

This one surprises a bit……but maybe reinforcements for Steel.

    • If he was meant for BSFC, I believe his contract would have been with them. Big Earn seems to see something in Cole he likes.

      • What Big Earn likes in my opinion is the small contract they can sign him for as a young upcoming winger. Not very easy to find that position at the league minimum that he will probably make for the next 3 or 4 years.

      • Big Earn is proving to be “Smart Earn,” then. You know, if it works out…

      • Even if it doesn’t, all it cost them was cash, right? it’s not our money ;).

      • I mean this makes sense either way you look at it, lock up a young promising winger for the future at a low price if it doesn’t work out you release him. Right now your looking at an aging Le Toux and injury prone Pontius. Possibly an aging Ilsinho. But gives you cover with Leo, Ayuk, Restrepo and Missimo. Plus how many speedy 6’1″ wingers are there available for the league minimum.

    • And they still could loan him out to BSFC if/when needed, I assume. I assume they get greater flexibility by having him on the Union roster and loaning out, versus having him be a BSFC contracted player.
