Bethlehem Steel FC announced on Friday the acquisition of goalkeeper Samir Badr from fellow USL side Colorado Springs Switchbacks.

Bethlehem Steel head coach Brendan Burke said in a team press release. “We are happy to be adding a young talented goalkeeper to our core. We believe Samir has the potential to progress beyond the USL at some stage and we are excited to see what he can do with us in 2016.”

Born in Fairfax, Virginia, joined the DC United youth system in 2007 before opting out of college to join FC Porto’s academy in Portugal in 2008.

Badr joined Portuguese second division side Vizela in 2012 and was later loaned to Egyptian Premier League side El-Hodood.

In 2014, Badr returned to the US to sign with USL side Oklahoma City Energy, making 13 appearances. Released after the 2014 season, Badr signed with Colorado Springs in 2015 where he made seven appearances.

A former US youth international, Badr earned three caps with the US U-20 MNT in 2010.

  1. Can we field a starting 11 yet?

    • Signed:
      GK – Samir Badr, 23
      DF – Ryan Richter, 26
      DF – Michael Daly, 28
      MF – Bolu Akinyode, 21
      MF – Derrick Jones, 18
      F – Gabe Gissie, 19
      MF – Corey Burke, 23
      F – Amoy Brown, 19

  2. Interesting. Wonder if this is indication they’ve given up on retaining Sylvestre? Seems like you would want an older veteran as MLS back-up if he’s going to be sitting on bench for roughly 25-30 games.
