Hackworth fired, Curtin named as interim head coach

The Philadelphia Union announced today that John Hackworth has been fired as head coach.

Replacing him as interim head coach is assistant head coach Jim Curtin.

Philadelphia Union CEO & Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz said in a statement, “We are a very ambitious club and although we are just in our fifth season we expect to win and be in the top tier of MLS. Today we will begin a serious global search for a Team Manager who will help guide us to our goal of competing to win the MLS Cup.”

“Philadelphia is a major market and we expect that there will be significant interest from a wide variety of qualified candidates to become Philadelphia Union’s Team Manager,” Sakiewicz continued. “Our great fans, partners and community deserve a winning team and we will doing everything in our power to win.”

Jim Curtin, a native of Oreland, Pa., played over 200 games with Chicago Fire beginning in 2001 after graduating from Villanova University. He finished his playing career with Chivas USA. After first working with the Union Academy for three years, Curtin was hired as an assistant coach for the first team in November of 2012.

Curtin’s first game as interim head coach will be on Tuesday, June 17 when the Union host Harrisburg City Islanders in fourth round US Open Cup play.

After a stunning offseason of signings, including the additions of Argentine midfielder Cristhian Maidana, French midfielder Vincent Nogueira, and US international Maurice Edu, the Union started the season brightly with a commanding performance in the season opening draw in Portland, followed by a home opening win over New England.

However, the results quickly turned against the Union, who were winless for 10 games before defeating Sporting Kansas City on May 14. In 2014, the Union compiled a 3-7-6 record under Hackworth.

Hackworth began with the club on November 9, 2009 as an assistant coach to Peter Nowak and club’s Youth Development Coordinator. He became interim head coach when Nowak was fired in on June 13, 2012. The interim tag was removed on August 30, 2012. Under Hackworth, the Union compiled a 23-30-20 record, including a franchise best 12 wins in 2013.

“We appreciate the work, time and efforts John Hackworth put into building the club and his influence on our growing youth academy,” Sakiewicz said. “He is a first class person and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

WOW! I finally got on the Keep Hackworth bandwagon yesterday and now this….

  2. “Today we will begin a search…” !!??? This is stupid. Horrible way to run a club. You never fire a manager unless you have someone better to fill the space. The decision might be the right one in the end, but unless the guy is willfully delinquent in his duties, you don’t fire him until you have a better replacement lined up.
    .
On a personal level, I’m sad to see Hackworth go. I liked his vision for the team and he is a great guy. Too bad the results never came.
    .
Here goes another two years of rebuilding and wasting money on new players.

    • no the team was hemorrhaging fans and credibility. This was more symbolic than anything. This isn’t the most horrible thing to do.

      • Agreed. Totally agree. It is more disingenuous to look for a girlfriend when you already have a girlfriend.

      • But it is a clear sign that the FO has given up on this season. Unless they actually have someone else already lined up who is planning on bringing in a big signing, this move basically says they are content with the team for this year. No way a new signing will come if the coach is up in the air.

      • The Irony is a loose Philadelphia Union with nothing to play for might be more fun to watch.

      • John Ling says:

Just so long as that doesn’t lead to Curtin getting the gig full time…

      • Why would that be a bad thing, if he can do the job?

      • The assumption is he can’t

      • John Ling says:

Because between now and, say, 6 games into the season we don’t know if he can do the job or not. That’s how we got to this spot – Hackworth took over, team looked better, interim tag got removed. I’m not interested in repeating that cycle.

      • yes yes and yes again.

      • The Black Hand says:

We are not exactly left with nothing to play for. There is more than enough talent, within this club, to pull out a string or two. Will they? I don’t know. It all comes down to; what personnel is Curtin going to deploy?. If he gets it right, we could be kind of nasty.
        .
The East sucks! We’ve all still got a legit shot.

      • The East sucks so much!

    • Not to mention, it would be a bit awkward to start a search for a new head coach while the old one is still managing the team. No way you could keep that a secret for long…

    • This is actually pretty good. If you accept we would have lost repeatedly with Hack then you accept we may lose without him. No chance a coach search would be kept secret so let him go now. What this allows us to do is say in a month have a new coach hired then let him come over here and watch from the owners box and observe at practice. He can evaluate our talent and see who he likes and doesn’t like, then once the season ends he takes over full control from the interim coach.

    • @ Spugger

You liked Hack’s vision for the team????

To run around aimlessly and kick the ball into the middle in hopes that something might happen on offense and to play a forward with no experience as a starting center back and 4 DM’s in various miscast positions on defense…..

    • scottymac says:

This was SO OVERDUE. He may never coach at this level again. Don’t be surprised. He was out of his depth from Day 1.

  3. Wow.
I honestly didn’t think it would happen this season.
    .
It was a long time coming as this team was seriously underperforming.
    .
With the last 2 games being what they were I can only assume that the decision was made probably around the Galaxy game.
    .
With Jim Curtin hired I wouldn’t expect anything radically different from the team until next year. But hopefully he will bring stability to the line up.
    .
I don’t expect any more major signings until the new coach is established either.

    • your last point is spot on – I don’t anticipate any additions to the squad for the rest of this season

      • Andy Muenz says:

Which argues against the firing. If the Union aren’t looking to improve during the summer window and everyone else is, it puts them one step behind going into the off season.

      • not really.
Look we are essentially rebuilding again. We have a solid core to build around but picking up the wrong guy for the new coach would be a waste of time effort and money

      • old soccer coach says:

Okugo can leave after this season. Edu can leave after this season. Nogueira has played well enough that other teams in this league or others will want him after this season. There will be no solid core in the central channel after this season. Why would Carlos Valdes want to come back to this team? Firing him now makes me think that there was an irreconcilable disagreement between manager and managing partner.

      • No your right. We should have given Hack more money to ruin the team for another 2 years. Were you here for the end of the Nowak error? Desperate signings ruin clubs.

      • Andy Muenz says:

Desperate signings like Maidana and Noguera? Would they have signed for a team without a coach?
        .
There were no desperate signings with Nowak. He had a team that had just made the playoffs and then lost his mind and started a fire sale. Despite the Wenger deal, Hackworth was not showing signs of completely changing his mentality to the detriment of the franchise the way Nowak did.

  4. Southside Johnny says:

    At least 6 months late.

  5. Southside Johnny says:

Really not his fault. He never should have been promoted.

  6. Put simply
Soccer = Greatest Sport in World
Philly = Greatest Sports Town in World

Therefore, anything less than “great soccer” will not be tolerated for long. Bye Hack!

  7. WOW. While shocking, not entirely surprising given Sak’s lack of endorsement since before KC.

  8. I fear that Hackworth’s most enduring legacy will be the Jack McInerney trade.

    • Southside Johnny says:

I called it when it happened. The irony of what Jack did to legitimize his promotion and make him look a genius (for a minute) after Nowak was canned to his demise is beyond bizarre.

  9. While I agree that this was a needed move, I don’t think the list of available (and realistic) coaches is that long or distinguished. Other than college coaches right now, I don’t know who else would really be available until after the season and the coaching carousel begins. So I guess the big question is, do we go with an MLS re-tread who is familiar with how the cap and other MLS financials work, or do we look outside MLS for fresh blood and hope they can acclimate to MLS quickly?

    • i think the trick is to get one of each. we need someone who is familiar with the league and can wheel and deal to keep us under the cap and get draft picks but we also need a real coach who can help the players match up and play well with each other. it is probably should be two different people who will have to work well together

  10. 700 chopper says:

Hey David Moyes is looking for a job lets get him

    P.S. so Hackworth you sucked

    • Yea I said a month ago that David Moyes should definitely be looked at. I think we should look into getting a coach outside of the MLS who has European experience and who can bring that to the Union. The U are in desperate need to have the European style of play enforced.

    • He sucked so much!

      • The Union aren’t Man U or even close to a team of that stature so lets be real here. David Moyes I don’t think would be horrible in the MLS.

  11. LMAO!!!! Such glorious news! The debate is over!!! This needed to happen like yesterday! Last season even..HA! Now this organization can truly rebuild itself into a top tier MLS club.

  12. I guarantee you see a crazy turn around in this team for the better. Got rid of our cancer and now its time for a playoff run.

  13. Is there anyone happier in that locker room than Austin Berry right now?

  14. I’m genuinely surprised.

  15. The Black Hand says:

Needed to be done…a year and a half ago.
    .
    Time to rebuild…again.

  16. On The Right Track says:

Holy Shiz……I can’t believe it! How about Eric Wynalda?

  17. On The Right Track says:

    …..or Hans Backe?

  18. I wish we could hire him back solely as a GM. He seemed really good at that.

    • I would debate that assertion.
Also it is hard to say where Hackworth ended and Sak began as a GM.

    • Maybe have him come back to handle the supplemental draft for the Union each year. We did pretty well there compared to everywhere else.

      • Dan C (formerly of 103) says:

or he had to play those guys because everything else he did was lousy….

  19. Philly Cheese says:

Time will tell if good move, but this does allow a full search without knee jerk hiring pressure. Last transition lead to some improved results in short term.

  20. Thank you for your time Coach. You seem like a class act, but this move was well past due. Of course, replacing him with an assistant at this point really makes no difference. Hopefully as they stated, its only in the interim and they are looking for a permanent replacement.

    • Part of me feels like they just switched interim coaches. I hope this time they get a truly excellent coach no hard feelings Mr Hackworth. Someone get David Moyes on the line oh never mind he just got a job

  21. Sturridge says:

    Tab Ramos

    • This!! I’m on the hire Ramos bandwagon. As soon as the USA’s World Cup is done (hopefully on July 13th) and before he even gets on the flight home; I’d be calling Ramos offering him the job.

      • The Realist Brian says:

Sorry both of you. I have watched the u-20’s religiously, and Tab Ramos is not a good coach. He makes the same type of boneheaded substitutions that Hackworth made. Which is to say we will get more of the same with Jim Curtain, unless he was opposed to Hack and we don’t know it. But back to Tab, he got thoroughly out coached in the last YWC, and we crashed an burned out of the first round with an exceptionally talented team. He brought a kid, Javon Torres, who was barely playing for ULCA, over MLS defenders like Walker Zimmerman, and played him. To be fair to Javon, wasn’t his fault, but Tab was the one who picked him. Tab has very little coaching experience except he coached at the NJSA to little accomplishments and then he moved to the U-20’s? Steer clear. Great players don’t make great coaches.

    • A million times, this! Doubt he’d even consider it until after the WC, in case Jurgen falls flat on his face and USSF cleans house. He’d be next in line in that case, no doubt.

    • Agreed. I would be excited about this.

    • I like Tab Ramos, but in Tab you are getting the same candidate when the Union hired Hack – a player development person – Tab has been working with juniors most of the time. Do we want that again?

I am most curious to see what the next manager gets paid. “Big market” team (Ha!) with shallow pockets. Any first rate manager is going to come with a hefty salary requirement.

  22. Andy Muenz says:

While many on this site (myself included) feel Hackworth left a lot to be desired as a game day coach (which makes his what he did in the second half on Saturday even more ironic), I’d like to respectfully disagree with comments such as “Hackworth you sucked” and express sentiments similar to Spugger that on a personal level, I would have loved to have seen Hackworth succeed. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy and a guy the players wanted to play for.
    .
While the results may not have been what we wanted he did do several good things for the team, starting with playing Amobi and Jack from day 1, even if Amobi wasn’t in the position we would have liked to see him in. He also showed faith in Zac and allowed him to mature. Think how much worse off the Union would be without some of his saves this season.
    .
Hackworth got Adu off the payroll and brought in guys like Edu, Maidana and Noguera, the latter two have made the Union much more entertaining to whatch this season, even if the results aren’t always there. Given that 45% of the responders on this site said they’d rather the Union lose while playing attractive soccer than parking the bus and winning (and this team has played attractive soccer for much of the year), I don’t see 45% of the comments reflecting that.
    .
So while I have mixed emotions regarding Hackworth’s depature, I do want to say thanks to him for putting in the effort to give us an entertaining team and making me look forward to going to PPL Park 20 times a year.

  23. Hackworth was done a favor unless the same team goes on a tear through the rest of 2014 & advances in playoffs – which is not likely. He will be responsible for only 1/3 of the year.
The Jack Mac trade isn’t his legacy: FO wasn’t going to pay to keep him, so it took a deal early enough in the year to preempt fan revolt had 9 started regularly finding the back of the net.
Coach always carried himself with dignity and we saw what his team thought of him in SKC. He deserves a job that better suits his strengths.

    • The eventual loss of Okugo and <Mac may be part of his legacy.

      • Make a list of who you want to keep. Find out what it’ll take. Move Amobi up & Mo back. That should be Curtin’s charge. MacMath may be lured to Europe.

      • I’d be looking for a way to get Okugo into the Lahoud slot that worked so well the other night. This assumes you can piece together two starting caliber CBs of course, but what do we have to lose from giving White/Berry a run? Or finding a middle of the road CB in the the transfer window?

      • Futty Danso just got traded for a second round draft pick. Would you want him?

      • I’d take him just for the chant potential his name offers alone.

  24. McMohansky says:

    Onward and upward!

  25. Fantastic news!!!!! This madness had to end. I’m sure the Union will get a quality coach. Finally they can take their time and find the right person. For the people with a softer side, I’m 100% confident Hackworth will get a job as a development coach somewhere. Hopefully this keeps Nogs and company interested in staying and not asking for a transfer at season’s end. Hell it might even be the catalyst to invite a certain Colombian central defender back when the WC is over!!!!!!!!!

  26. Congratulations to the Union for making a difficult choice. I’ve met coach Hackworth a few times and he is indeed a genuinely likable guy. That said, he was either overmatched or underprepared or a combination of both. What I do know is I wish the man well and thank you for being the bridge to better football in Philly.
    .
YO! UNION! GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • I imagine the FO has a ‘hopeful’ list and a more ‘realistic’ list with 3-5 candidates. I also would not be surprised if the new manager is on the sidelines for the next league game on 28th.

  27. Let us all thank John Hackworth for his time and efforts, and wish him the best wherever the game takes him.

  28. Good luck, sir, and I wish you well, except against the Union, wherever you land.

  29. i just hope curtin isn’t more conservative than hackworth. i remember last season before he deleted his twitter he was tweeting a defense of (i believe it was) keon daniel. maybe i am not remembering correctly or reading into it too much though

    • This is a good point. It takes guts to play the attacking brand of soccer Hackworth finally was doing. Think how conservative Hack was in his first few months as an interim coach. We could be in for more of the same.

      • The Black Hand says:

I can’t tell if this is a joke, or not.
        .
We have 15pts, through 16 games. Did I miss the fine attacking play that Hackworth developed?

      • i think he is talking about the attempt that was made to possess and move rather than bunker and counter

  30. Murphthesurf says:

Good Luck wherever you land Mr.Hackworth.

Okay, so, which International Coaches are available,
or will become available after the World Cup ?

    Players:

Frank Lampard is still available to come and play.
    Jozy Altidore might be available.

    Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno left back

    Down the Road:

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic:

    http://www.goal.com/en-india/news/222/transfer-zone/2014/06/10/4872209/ibra-ill-leave-psg-for-mls-in-two-years?ICID=SP_TS_3

Just as DC United has VW,

Perhaps Philadelphia could persuade BMW as a sponsor ?
There are several BMW dealerships in the Greater Delaware Valley/ Southern NJ Delaware area…it’s a thought.

    Doop !

    • OneManWolfpack says:

We have no facilities! It’s gonna be a real struggle to land a huge name until they are built.
      .
If he goes anywhere, Lampard is going to LA.
      .
Altidore is gonna do well (wishful thinking) at the World Cup, and is still too young and talented to come back to MLS. He starts in Europe for a little while.
      .
Moreno is 21 and plays for Spain’s U-21 team. I don’t think he’s coming to MLS. My opinion. Also, he was pursued by Liverpool.
      .
Per the usual MLS protocol: Ibrahimovic would only be allowed to go to a major market… and while I like to think we are a major market… fact is, (right now) we definitely are not.
      .
I think BMW thing has legs though…

      • Murphthesurf says:

        Thanks for the BMW part….
okay, yeah, they will send the big names somewhere else. ..but, we are due…ny got Henry, fc new York just got dude…La already had becks, Toronto got theirs…c’mon!
I would be happiest with a big name coach, to try and draw players…we already have a new stadium and rabid fanbase. ..aside from practice facilities, what more could they want?
give the coach a nice mainline or Chester County pad, and admission for his kids to an elite school. ..it could happen. ..
        dude can dream. ..
        Peace and Doop~

  31. The Right Direction says:

Good luck Coach Hack. Best wishes for a successful future!

  32. jwlockerbie says:

Cruz, fell over as he heard the breaking news

  33. jwlockerbie says:

I believe Coach Hackworth is a great guy and did a lot of good in turning things around after Nowak. If the front office did not make this move, I fear the team would have lost all of the fans Hackworth brought back to the club.

    Best of luck, Mr. Hackworth

  34. The Chopper says:

Well, expect a lot of moment in the soccer world, post World Cup. Expect a lot of deals to be made around the world while the soccer community is together in Brazil. Despite the recent uptick in performance, the decision was probably made that no way John Hackworth returns next year barring an unlikely cup run.

So why not head into the Cup period with the soccer world knowing you are looking for your next manager? So you can approach guys like Tab Ramos for next year.

It also is actually a good time for Hackworth to line up that next gig scouting or developing youth for some club down the road.

Despite the shocking timing in terms of field play, the best move for all.

    • Dick Buttlewein says:

Excellent points! I hadn’t looked at it that way. I doubt we land Ramos but your point is well taken that much business will be conducted down in Brazil

  35. The Chopper says:

Now, since there is an opening on the coaching staff for the remainder of the season, Curtin’s first move should be name Brian Carroll an assistant coach. Might as well get him off the field and give him a head start on his next career.

  36. With this FO, I predict that there will be a nearly identical article two years from now regarding Curtin’s firing.
    .
Given that good (affordable) coaching options are limited, should we go look for the next Helena Costa?

  37. jwlockerbie says:

Now all the philly sports writers can say Chip Kelly is the longest tenure as a head coach

  38. Add me to those who are ‘conflicted’ with the decision. Hackworth was not a skilled tactical and game manager, it’s very true. His lineups were inconsistent, he sometimes played favorites, he couldn’t really adjust on the fly, and failed to really bring out the best in his teams. There was never any point during his tenure that I felt he could manage this team to an MLS Cup…that should be the mentality when selecting a manager. It felt like a convenience thing when he was promoted to the top job, rather than him being the top choice. The firing makes complete sense in terms of performance and what is best for the team, and probably should have been done a while ago.

However, I had the opportunity to be around Hackworth while I was doing some writing last summer for a website, and he was a quality guy through and through. Always very courteous to the media and it’s clear why the players supported him and liked him so much. So it is sad to see a gent like him lose his job. Wishing him and his family the best going forward…hope he can land an assistant job of some kind.

All that said, now it’s time for the Union FO (ESPECIALLY Sakiewicz) to get it right with who they hire. They need to bring in a guy who will have a clear vision, good tactical know-how, and a keen eye for talent. The Union have some, but there are players buried within the system right now who deserve more of a look. They need a guy who will bring out the best in the best players, and who will cultivate a good system of play. Honestly, Sakiewicz is the one who should be under the microscope now–he needs to get this right. Five years of underperforming teams is too long for a city with this kind of support. Do what must be done to bring in the right guy who will give the right players the opportunity to shine and play quality, attacking football.

    • Good comments. Your second and third sentences sum up the situation well: “Hackworth was not a skilled tactical and game manager, it’s very true. His lineups were inconsistent, he sometimes played favorites, he couldn’t really adjust on the fly, and failed to really bring out the best in his teams.”

I have no doubt that Hackworth is a good guy – his players certainly seemed to like him – but it takes a lot more than being a good guy to succeed as head coach of a professional soccer team.

Hopefully, the Union front office can sign a head coach who will bring long-term success to the franchise. The loyal fans at PPL Park deserve nothing less.

    • OneManWolfpack says:

Just because you are a nice guy doesn’t mean you’re good at your job. This is the pros. You have to be better than 3 wins in 16 games, and your season basically over by the World Cup break. Period.

    • New England made some bold and shrewd decisions, a few good draft picks and have completely turned the franchise around. Many hopes we can do the same.

  39. redbullsarethebest says:

Red bulls are so much better than union, you guys are wasting your time rooting for the wrong team.

  40. The Redbullshits suck this year as well so there is no argument. Well see if the U can get back on track after the WC break.

  41. I would like to thank Hack for his time here rebuilding this team. I wish his time here would have been successful. I hope this will not put the U into a tailspin. the recent good form has me hoping for a run….crazy or visionary….time will tell

  42. This needed to happen for the life of this franchise. I said it before, this is a top media and sports market with a team in a league that is trying to be taken seriously. You need to build a team and organization that is representative of that market. Now they need to bring in a manager with solid soccer pedigree in all aspects of the game. I don’t think they should go with someone who was on the staff. Curtin as interim manager is an interesting choice. But an outside choice should be the option moving forward. I think the overall staff and team needs to be re-evaluated by whoever takes over as manager. While Hackworth was wrong for the job there are also some major posers wearing the Union jersey who should also go .In order to play for the Union players need to have MLS level soccer skills at the very least. Danny Cruz for example, for all of his admirable hustle, could be out of here once the talent, and skill level as well as work ethic of the players is evaluated. I am surprised that this happened so soon. I was hoping it would happen over the WC break, but I honestly thought it would be at the end of the season. I don’t think this will be Hackworth’s last shot at MLS.

  43. LosDarth117 says:

Hackworth’s firing does not make us a better team…but
    .
…better late than later (shouda happened after Montreal loss).
    .
I do not believe that our talent is better than our record…but I hope I’m wrong and our 2nd half of the season goes better.

    • I agree. Sooo much talk about this team not playing up to its talent. People, this team is not talented. it has 2 or 3 players with talent, but this team is not talented. I repeat, not talented.

  44. Southside Johnny says:

Andy Reid, check. John Hackworth, check. Now if the Phillies dump Ruben Amaro, maybe I can eventually get off the medication…

  45. File under “Money Talks:” Who is U courting for next jersey sponsorship (starts 2016, but might buy 2015)? Verizon? Comcast? Can they get “Altidore money?” Because we all know that the best strikers are bought from Europe, not SuperDrafted.

  46. The Realist Brian says:

Later Hackworth. Nice guy I am sure. But an airhead with coaching decisions.
    .
Bring in a serious, foreign coach. Or Marsch. Or Wynalda.

  47. Finally! Good job Sak! Now please find us a Coach that will turn things around here.

I wonder if Moreno can coach? He really understood what was going on with this team. I was on the same page as him with many of his observations. Just a thought.

New coach will have to make a big decision on who to trade/let go….Okugo or Edu. They play the same position and each deserve to start for a team in their true position. Better to use the funds towards a striker or center back. I like BC off the bench though when needed.

  48. Shouldve been done 5-6 games ago.. Too much talent on this team for so many draws & L’s! Sometimes subs were just basic common sense but stupid desicions were made…

Just hoping for somebody who can take advantage of & Know how to manage the talent & players this team has… Because talent is there… #DOOP!

  49. Dick Buttlewein says:

I’m hoping for a seasoned, ‘old school’ foreign manager who only wants to coach. A guy who has a vision, or plan he’s used before and won with. A guy who recognizes and can sort through the talent we have. Then let Sak go and get Carlos Valdes back and voila we’d be soooooooo much better off.
    #####
I actually believe Hack and Sak put together a pretty damn good roster this year. Hack just didn’t have the experience to know how to deploy the talent all at once. Shouldn’t be a huge surprise to any of us. He’s a young, inexperienced coach!

    • OneManWolfpack says:

For the most part I agree that the roster is pretty talented and that Hack just didn’t know how to use it. It’s a shame because I had a lot hopes for this season. While it’s not completely over, it is a real uphill climb to save something. Hack was what we needed after. Nowak, but he had his flaws and it showed.
