Philadelphians Abroad: A local in the Champions League

Last week we wrote about RJ Allen, a local lad who faced the misfortune of relegation that comes with the European game. This week we can celebrate another Philly native who has prospered in that same system.

For the fourth time since signing with the club in 2009 Eddie Gustafsson, a Sweedish national team goalkeeper born in Philadelphia, will compete in the UEFA Champions League with Red Bull Salzburg.

Gustafsson’s playing career began in 1983 with IFK Stockholm, where he played with the club’s youth teams while making the rounds with Sweden’s junior national teams. He graduated to the full men’s team in 1993 and made five appearances with the Swedish side before moving to IFK Norrköping, also in Sweden. Gustafsson would make 86 appearances over five years, before moving to Norwegian side Molde FK in 2002. Gustafsson was their first choice goalkeeper for three seasons, but when his contract expired after the 2004 season he decided to shop himself around. After taking part in several fruitless trials for clubs in Europe and America, Gustafsson joined another Norwegian club, Hamarkameratene. After one season, he signed with FK Lyn where he remained for three seasons. On January 8, 2009, Gustafsson signed a contract with FC Red Bull Salzburg where he has played ever since.

European competition is nothing new to Gustafsson. Quickly establishing himself as starting goalkeeper and team captain, he led his squad club through the 2009-10 Champions League qualifying rounds. After wins against Bohemians and Dinamo Zagreb, the club bowed out of the competition after two losses to Maccabi Haifa in the play-offs, but qualified for the 2009-10 UEFA Europa League, eventually reaching the knockout round of that tournament.

On April 18, 2010 Gustafsson broke his leg in an Austrian Premier League match against LASK Linz, when he was fouled by Linz forward Lukas Kragl. As Gustafsson went to clear the ball following a through pass, Kragl tried to block but was late and caught Gustafsson midway up his left shin, breaking both his tibia and fibula in the tackle.

After eight months off the field recovering from the injury, Gustafsson played for the first time in a friendly against FC Spartak Moscow in January 2011. His injury had an unfortunate effect on his standing in the team’s depth charts making him now second choice between the posts for Red Bull behind teammate Alexander Walke. Despite his standing, Gustafsson still made nine appearances with the club this season across all competitions.
