Philly Soccer Six post season roundup

Drexel University was the only Philly school selected on Monday night to participate in the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship. This marks the first appearance for the Dragons since 1972 and the third in school history. Drexel will host No. 11 Brown in the first round match on Thursday at 4pm at Vidas Field.

Drexel has a 12-3-3 record overall and has allowed only 16 goals in 18 matches. The Dragons finished first in the CAA’s regular season, earning a bye in the quarterfinals of the conference. Drexel hosted Hofstra on Friday night in the CAA’s semifinals. Fabio Machado put the Dragons on the board in the 26th minute and Hofstra leveled the match with a goal in the 79th minute. The game went to penalty kicks after 2 scoreless overtime periods. Hofstra earned the win on the sixth tie-breaking shot.

The La Salle Explorers faced Saint Louis in the Atlantic 10 quarterfinals on Thursday morning. This marks La Salle’s third consecutive trip to the post season. Jason Plumhoff scored an equalizer for the Explorers in the 79th minute, but the eventual 2012 A10 Championship winners went on to score 2 goals in the final minutes of the match. La Salle was defeated 3-1 and finished with a 10-7-3 record overall.

The Owl’s faced VCU in the Atlantic 10 quarterfinals on Thursday evening. Temple lost the match 1-0 to VCU who went on to lose to Saint Louis in the championship final. The Owl’s finished 10-6-3 in their last season as a member of the Atlantic 10. Temple’s soccer program will move to the Big East in 2013.

Penn won their final regular season game 3-1 against Harvard on Saturday. The Quakers saw goals from Kamar Saint-Loius, Sam Engs and Travis Cantrell. Penn finished with an overall record of 3-13-0.
