It was a relatively quiet week for Philadelphia area soccer players. We did see another goal for the Wilmington Hammerheads from Corey Hertzog, and assists from two regional players who have eluded the tally sheet so far this year, Jeff Parke of Seattle and Tom Brandt of Harrisburg.
More important perhaps than any individual accomplishments of the locals this week is the collective success of area players within the USL. With the USL Pro League’s regular season coming to an end, the Harrisburg City Islanders’ Sunday win over the Los Angeles Blues would clinch the league’s final playoff spot for the team and ensure that all five teams featuring area players would make it into that league’s playoffs.
On Saturday, August 25, Hertzog and the Wilmington Hammerheads face off against Jason Yeisley and Ryan Heins of the Kickers in Richmond, while Jimmy McLaughlin, J.T. Noone, Tom Brandt, and Morgan Langley of the Harrisburg City Islanders square off against Tony Donatelli and Ryan Righter of the Charleston Battery at Blackbaud Stadium. Waiting to take on one of these teams in the next round are Tyler Bellamy, Drew Cost, and the rest of the Rochester Rhinos, as well as league leading Orlando City S.C.
With such great representation throughout the playoff teams, we are guaranteed to see at least one local lad vying for the USL Championship.
