With only one game taking place in the MLS over the past week, it seemed only right to turn our attention to the performance of Philadelphia-area players in this year’s edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The third round of the U.S. Open Cup provided plenty of drama across the country, not the least of it involving local players. Local players participated in 7 matches in this round for 11 different teams.
Had it not been for the fortunes of the upstart Cal F.C. against the Portland Timbers, all of the news of the tournament might have been around Tuesday’s matchup between the Harrisburg City Islanders and New England Revolutions. While Philadelphia-area players would take the field for both sides, it would be none other that Philadelphia Union alumnus J.T. Noone that would steal the show. After a comparatively quiet 90 minutes that left the scoreboards at the Skyline Sports Complex blank after regulation time, the flood gates would open in extra time. Despite playing down a man, New England quickly put three on the board in the first half of overtime. With 9 minutes left and all seemingly lost, Harrisburg began their rally. After a quick succession of goals by Harrisburg’s Brian Ombiji and Sainey Touray, the culminating point would come from Noone in the last minute of play sending the match into penalty kicks. While Noone would miss his PK for Harrisburg, the setback would not be great enough to derail the City Islanders, and the efforts of Noone would go down in local legend.
Local lad Corey Hertzog also showed of his prowess at the USL Pro level this week. Fresh on loan from New York, Hertzog stepped up big time for the Wilmington Hammerheads. In his debut for Wilmington, Hertzog scored two run-of-play goals and provided an assist for a third off of a Sheanon Williams-esque long throw in, giving Wilmington the win and Orlando City their first loss of the season.
Here’s how other local players in the pros did over the last week
