Union take Penn & Princeton players in supp. draft

The Philadelphia Union’s used their first pick, 13th overall, in the first round of the 2012 Supplemental draft to selected defender Tom Brandt (University of Pennsylvania). With their second pick the Union selected forward Krystian Witkowski from Marist College. Princeton forward Antoine Hoppenot was the team’s third round selection. The Union’s final pick was midfielder Brandon Zimmerman (Santa Clara).

Brandt, co-captain in 2010, was the captain of the Quakers in 2011 and was named to Third Team NSCAA All-American and First Team All-Ivy. He was named First Team NSCAA All-Northeast Region and First Team All-Ivy in 2010.

Witkowski, a three-time NSCAA All-Region and All-MAAC honoree, is the first player from Marist to be drafted into MLS. In his four years at Marist he recorded scored 21 goals and 12 assists.

Hoppennot, the Ivy League Player of the Year in 2010, was named First Team All-Ivy in 2011. He scored 26 goals with 15 assists during four seasons with Princeton.

Three-Time All-WCC Midfielder Brandon Zimmerman was named to the All-WCC Second Team in 2011.

University of Pennsylvania/Reading United AC midfielder and Sons of Ben member Christian Barrerio was selected by—you guessed it—New York Red Bulls as the 12th pick of the third round. Also selected from Reading in the Supplemental Draft were Dawyne Smith (first round, third pick to New England), Brian Ownby (first round, seventh pick to Houston) and Evans Frimpong (first round, ninth pick to Chicago). Reading set a new club record in 2012 with seven alumni being drafted by MLS teams. Three Reading alumni were selected in the SuperDraft: No. 1 pick overall Andrew Wenger, Matt Hedges and Philadelphia Union third pick Raymon Gaddis.
