Jeremy Ortiz, a native of Edison, NJ, has been selected for the US National Futsal Team. A four year starter and co-captain in his senior year at La Salle University, the midfielder/forward has also played for Ocean City Barons, now the Ocean City Nor’easters, of the USL Premier Development League, and played professional soccer for the New Jersey Ironmen and Philadelphia Kixx of the Major Indoor Soccer League. He has also played for United German Hungarians since 2008.
Ortiz was selected for the US futsal squad after an identification camp held in early September. The team will be participating 2011 Grand Prix de Futsal in Brazil, playing its first match on October 16. The Grand Prix, founded in 2005, is a major competition ahead of the FIFA Futsal World Cup, to be held in Thailand in November of 2012. The US has won one silver and one bronze since the founding of the Futsal World Cup in 1989.
In United Soccer League of Pennsylvania play with UGH in the 2011-2012 season, Ortiz has scored six goals in three games. On Sunday, he made his last appearance with the club before heading to Brazil, scoring two goals against the Philadelphia Portuguese club in a match that ended 6–0.
Ortiz graduated from Lenape High School in Medford, NJ, before attending La Salle. Named to Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team, as well as the Philadelphia Soccer Seven team, three times, he was honored as a Regional All-American in 2006. He finished his college career in 2008 with 16 goals in 61 appearances.
