Independence / Indy match reports

Independence top Sky Blue 4-1 on the road

The Philadelphia Independence struck early when they traveled to Yurcak Field in Piscataway, NJ, on Saturday and never looked back. Five minutes after first kick, Amy Rodriguez made a run down the right and crossed to Danesha Adams, who struck a one-touch volley into the back of the net.

In the 17th minute Adams, making her first start of the season, returned the favor when she made a lovely through pass to Rodriguez, who promptly buried a shot past Sky Blue keeper Amanda Luckenbill.

The home side got a goal back when Rosana converted a penalty kick in the 27th minute after Natasha Kai was fouled in the box.

The score remained 2–1 until the 55th minute when Adams found herself in front of goal and unleashed a powerful shot. Luckenbill parried the shot with a diving save but Joanna Lohman was able to pick up the rebound and send it through the posts.

Tina DiMartino, newly signed from the now defunct St. Louis Athletica, made it 4–1 when she chipped the keeper from 20 yards out in the 74th minute.

Independence coach Paul Riley was very pleased with his team’s performance. “We were efficient in everything that we did. We scored four top-shelf goals, and every player stepped up and performed at the next level for us. Our fitness showed, especially in the second half. It is rare to get such a decisive win on the road in WPS and I think we really deserved it tonight.”

Sky Blue FC head coach Pauliina Miettinen called the Independence “very efficient,” adding, “They capitalized on each of their opportunities, and that paid off for them in the result. As a team, we have to take a long look at the film so we can correct our mistakes and come out with a better effort in our next match.”

The Independence are now in second place with a 5–3–2 record and travel to Kennesaw, GA to face the last place Atlanta Beat on Wednesday.
