Major League Soccer named its 2009 best XI today, and the list was full of familiar faces: Landon Donovan, Dwayne De Rosario, Shalrie Joseph, along with Donovan’s fellow U.S. national teamers: Conor Casey, Stuart Holden, Chad Marshall and Jeff Cunningham. Some big names were left off the list though, including Cuauhtémoc Blanco and Guillermo Barros Schelotto.
Here’s the full list:
GOALKEEPER (1): Zach Thornton (Chivas USA)
DEFENDERS (3): Geoff Cameron (Houston Dynamo), Wilman Conde (Chicago Fire), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew)
MIDFIELDERS (5): Dwayne De Rosario (Toronto FC), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Stuart Holden (Houston Dynamo), Shalrie Joseph (New England Revolution), Freddie Ljungberg (Seattle Sounders FC)
FORWARDS (2): Conor Casey (Colorado Rapids), Jeff Cunningham (FC Dallas)
What do you think of the choices? Did MLS leave out some deserving choices? Should Ljungberg’s great final stretch of games have been enough to earn him the award over Blanco and others? Does Geoff Cameron have a shot at the U.S. National Team, where three of four back line spots remain unsettled due to injury and inconsistent play? And will MLS get anywhere running this 3-5-2 formation? Weigh in below in the comments section.
