The Philadelphia Union took on LAFC on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at Subaru Park. The game was as lack luster as the weather and as the rain came down in the second half, fans began to leave the scoreless affair.
Jakob Glesnes’ streak of 101 MLS starts came to an end, also missing the game was José Martínez, both with midweek injuries.
In the first few minutes of the game, a yellow card was issued to Aaron Long for elbowing Julián Carranza in the face. Carranza stayed in the game but was subbed due to feeling dizzy at the half. Many fans felt that this play should have resulted in a red card but the referee only issued a yellow card.
The Union put a ball into the next but that DOOP was called off for being offside. That was the only shot to find the back of the net for either team all night.
Late in the 2nd half, another yellow card was issued to an LAFC player, this time it was Sergio Palencia for a challenge on Kai Wagner. Andre Blake has his 8th clean sheet on the season and the Union remain unbeaten in the last 4 league games.
Although the Union did not get 3 points, they are still in a 4-way tie for third place in the Eastern Conference. The pressure is on as the regular season winds down giving the Union 5 games to climb the table.
Having the honor of banging the big drum on Saturday night was Josh Shapiro, the Governor of Pennsylvania since 2023.
