Phoenix Sports Club hosting Gerhard Mengel Cup championship this weekend

Feasterville’s Phoenix SC is hosting the semifinals and championship games of the Gerhard Mengel Cup, the US Adult Soccer Association’s over-30 national championship tournament, this weekend.

Representing Region I in the tournament are Phoenix as well as Safira Soccer of Massachusetts. Region II is represented by Carpathia Kickers of Michigan, Region III by CD Motagua of Louisiana.

The tournament, which was first staged in 1984, is named after Gerhard Mengel, a player/coach and manager of Carpathia Kickers beginning in 1958. Mengel led the team to the US Amateur Cup Championship title in 1962. The long-serving Michigan soccer administrator went on to chair the National Cups Committee between 1997 and 2001 and in 2005 was honored with US Soccer’s Werner Fricker Builder Award.

The schedule for this weekend’s games is as follows:

Saturday, July 30 at 4 pm: Phoenix SC vs. Carpathia Kickers
Saturday, July 30 at 6pm: CD Motagua vs. Safira Soccer

Sunday, July 31 at 10 am: Third place game
Sunday, July 31 at 12 pm: Championship final

Founded in 1926, Phoenix SC plays in the United Soccer League of Pennsylvania. Admission to this weekend’s games is only $5 and parking is free. Those under 16 will enjoy free admission. German/American foods and beverages will be available for purchase on both days of the tournament with live music after the conclusion of play on Saturday night.
