Bethlehem Steel announced on Wednesday the signing of Lehigh University product Jamie Luchini.
Bethlehem head coach Brendan Burke said of Luchini, who’s hometown is Wexford, Pa., “We are very happy to be adding a player who recently represented Lehigh University and proved dangerous in front of goal during his college career. Our hope is that his form will translate to the professional level and he will add to the depth of our attacking core right away.”
Luchini, 21, was Lehigh’s top goalscorer in 2013 and 2014 and helped lead the team to the Patriot League Championship in 2015. After the 2015 season, the forward participated in the combine ahead of the 2016 MLS SuperDraft.
News of Luchini’s signing was first reported in articles at the beginning of March at the Lehigh University Athletics site and Allentown Morning Call — both of which have since been removed. Luchini was quoted at the time: “It was a relief to finally sign my first professional contract. While I was disappointed at the time to not get selected in the MLS Superdraft, it all ended up working in the end as I am able to sign and play for a USL team filled with quality players that can be put right into the Philadelphia Union roster. Additionally, I am able to finish my degree this semester, which is something I valued since Day 1.”
