West Chester United will play in the semifinal of the United States Adult Soccer Association’s (USASA) Werner Fricker Cup on Friday, July 17 at the Sportsplex Stadium in Virginia Beach.
The Open Cup semifinal and final are part of USASA’s National Championship Series, a weeklong event featuring all the finals of the competitions the association holds.
West Chester United plays in the United Soccer League of Pennsylvania (USLPA) and qualified for the semifinal after winning the East Penn Open Cup, and USASA Region I title.
The USLPA is Eastern Pennsylvania’s only league with US Elite Amateur League status and remains the top-level amateur league in the state. The league was founded in 1959 by a number of ethnic soccer clubs. Werner Fricker, for whom the Open Cup is named, was one of the original founders of the league. Fricker, who played for United German Hungarians, would go on to be selected to the league’s All Star Team every year from 1958-1968 and captained the All-Star squad from 1963-1968. He served as the league secretary from 1967-1970 and president from 1970-1972. Fricker then went on to lead the Eastern Pennsylvania Soccer Association from 1972-1974. As president of the US Soccer Federation from 1984-1990, Fricker presided over the formation of the US Women’s National Team and was instrumental in the US being named host of the 1994 World Cup.
West Chester finished league play in 5th place with a 8-7-3 record. 2015 marked the fourth consecutive time the club won the East Penn Open Cup. This will be their first appearance in the Werner Fricker Open Cup semifinals.
I will be live tweeting live from the game. You can follow along at @Michael_Fricker. USLPA will also be tweeting updates and you can follow them at @USLPA.
