Pfeffer called up for US U-20 camp in Austria, will depart after New England game

On Friday afternoon, Zach Pfeffer was called up for the US U-20 camp taking place in Linz, Austria, April 18-26.

Philadelphia Union fans will naturally be wondering if that means the midfielder will be unavailable to play at PPL Park against New England Revolution this Sunday, April 19.

Union press officer Chris Winkler confirmed to PSP and on Twitter that Pfeffer will leave for the US U-20 camp after Sunday’s game.

Pfeffer, who turned 20 in January, was called up by the US U-23s in March while he was serving a two-game suspension following the red card he received in the 2-0 loss to FC Dallas on March 21, appearing in the the 1-0 loss against Denmark on March 31.

A youth national team stalwart, having been a member of the U-17 and U-18 MNT’s, Pfeffer last appeared with the U-20s in September, 2014 scoring in the 1-1 draw with Argentina in Buenos Aires on September 9.

Also called up by U-20 head coach Tab Ramos was former Union Academy goalkeeper Zack Steffen, now with Freiburg in Germany. During the Austria camp, the US will face fellow U-20 World Cup side Qatar on April 21, followed byCroatia on April 25.

The US begins play in the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand on May 30 against Myanmar. In Group A, the US will play host country New Zealand on June 10 and Ukraine on June 5.
