It’s a busy stretch for the Philadelphia Union, and on the latest edition of the KYW Philly Soccer Show, KYW’s Greg Orlandini and PSP’s Eli Pearlman-Storch are joined by KYW Newsradio sportscaster Matt Leon to talk about everything that’s happening.
After defeating Montreal in league play on Saturday, on Tuesday the Union defeated FC Dallas in their US Open Cup semifinal in Texas , 4-3 in penalty kicks, after the game ended 1-1 after extra time. The team will now host Seattle Sounders in the Cup final at PPL Park on Sept. 16 or 17 (date to be confirmed soon).
The Union remain in the Lone Star State to face the Houston Dynamo in MLS play in Friday night’s nationally televised game (9 pm, NBCSN, NBC Sports Live Extra).
The Union is currently holding onto the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and a win at the Dynamo could solidify that spot.
Greg, Eli, and Matt then discuss the coaching rumors surrounding the Union, with René Meulensteen being the person most mentioned to become the team’s new manager. The Dutchman has been an assistant with Manchester United, and his last job was the boss at Fulham, of the English Premier League.

Another good show…I have two thoughts:
1. The closest thing to the Open Cup in American sports is, I think, a big non-conference college football game. Florida/FSU, Michigan/ND, that sort of thing. Something’s on the line, even if it doesn’t affect the conference record.
2. Ray-ray and his bowtie are maybe 1 more year away from being the face of the franchise.
