KYW Philly Soccer Show: Chivas USA’s Eric Avila, Union’s problems, the US WC team

There’s a lot to talk about this week in the world of soccer, both locally and internationally, and the latest edition of the KYW Philly Soccer Show is right in the middle of it.

First, KYW’s Greg Orlandini and Philly Soccer Page writer Eli Pearlman-Storch are joined by Chivas USA defender Eric Avila. The converted midfielder will be helping to hold down the defense when Chivas USA faces the Union on Saturday (10:30 pm: CSN, MLS Live, MLS Direct Kick, DirecTV).

Chivas, like the Union, are toward the bottom of the standings and struggling for points.

Then CBS3′s Kevin Kinkead joins Greg and Eli to diagnose the problems facing the Union after another heavy loss, this time at the hands of the Landon Donovan-led LA Galaxy. Philly has given up nine goals over the last two games as the season continues to slip away.

The panel then shifts gears to the US National Team, which defeated Azerbaijan, 2-0, in an uninspired friendly at Candlestick Park on Tuesday as they tune up for the World Cup, which starts for them on June 16 when they face Ghana in their first game in Group G.

Also discussed is the controversial decision by coach Jurgen Klinsmann to leave Landon Donovan off the 23-man World Cup roster.

  1. this is a great episode. i especially liked the discussion challenging the assumptions about a ‘good’ practice player or a ‘good’ locker room

    • Yes! So true. So true. I learned this pretty quick my first year coaching HS soccer.
A lot of me worries that Klinsman drinks a similar juice as Hackworth.

  2. Again Excellent show!! I don’t hold out any hope that Sakeiwicz or Hackworth will step outside of their gerrymandered reality to listen to the discussion about the Union. Which makes me ask again, why aren’t these issues you all openly discussed brought up during Hackworth’s press conferences? I’m talking the tactical common sense issues that anyone with the most elementary soccer IQ can see. Why isn’t Hackworth pressed about rosters moves and ingame strategies and practice vs game decisions? He is allowed to spew the same BS and rhetoric game after game in pressers and no one calls him on it. I for one sincerely hope he is gone by the WC break. I agree with Eli a house cleaning is needed. They a need real quality manager.

    • Can any reporter covering any sport really, I mean really, ask any of the questions they want, the way they want?
They just wouldn’t be invited back or called on. It’s the way it goes. You have to frame your questions. Kevin asked a few that ruffled the feathers the past few weeks, I believe.

      • this is the thing to realize. its not like this is an elected official with a certain obligation to the press

      • Reporters have been asking tough probing questions for centuries. No one needs to be Howard Eskinesque aka just plain obnoxious, but the hard questions need to be asked. Politicians, Sports and Celebrities are always asked questions that put them on the spot. Kereith Gabriel is paid to do the fluff pieces. The Union wants us to buy tickets and merchandise so questions need to be asked. There was nothing discussed on this pod that couldn’t be asked during Hackworth’s pressers. Shout out to Kevin!
Thanks again guys for a great cast. Will there be a special on the World Cup?

      • To be fair Tannenwald gets one question a week.
