The Philadelphia Union had four picks in the third and fourth rounds of the 20114 MLS SuperDraft, which took place on Tuesday via conference call.
Their first selection was the sixth of the day (44th overall) and the Union used it to pick defender Richard Marquez from Division III school the University of Redlands. The bio for the 2013 SCIAC Athlete of the Year lists him at 6′ 2” and 180 lbs.
Next, they selected midfielder Alex Sweetin from the St. Louis University with the eighth pick of the day (46th overall). In his four-year career in St. Louis, he compiled 18 goals and 22 assists over 73 starts and 76 appearances. In 2013 he had 6 goals and 6 assists over 16 appearances, all of which were starts. His bio list him at 5′ 9″ and 155 lbs. He comes in at No. 83 in TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Top 100.
With the last of their third round picks, the Union selected midfielder Aodhan Quinn from the University of Akron, where he scored 7 goals and 1 assist in 16 appearances (13 starts) in 2013. The bio for the 2013 MAC Player of the Year and Hermann Trophy semifinalist lists him at 6′ and 155 lbs and he comes in at No. 10 in TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Top 100. A veteran of the Seattle Sounders U-23 team, Quinn is the son of Brian Quinn, the Irish American who played for Everton (though he never left the reserve squad) and in the NASL with the LA Aztecs, Montreal Manic, and San Diego Sockers. Quinn Sr. would earn 48 caps with the USMNT between 1991 and 1994.
The Union had one final pick in the fourth round (63rd overall), and they used it to select Brazilian-born forward/midfielder Luca Gimenez from Wake Forest. Listed at 5′ 10″, Gimenez comes in at No. 38 in TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Top 100. He scored 6 goals and 3 assists over 13 appearances (9 starts) in 2013.
Quinn kinda plays like a left-footed Marfan
yay dudes
hopefully one of them pans out
I know these dudes are picked in the 3rd & 4th rounds for a reason, but that Quinn dude looks pretty nice. Hope he has a good camp.
Quinn: Say, Philly, do you like chipped balls?
Philly: Do I ever!
Quinn: Do you like through balls?
Philly: Yes, Mr. Quinn.
Quinn: Well, why don’t I come over and join your team and we’ll have nice assists, and then some beer.
Ives Galarcep was raving about the Union’s draft during his chat today. He thought we were picking up strong talent even today. Not saying he’s going to be right, but at least positive to hear.
Odds are at least a couple of these guys will get cut during the preseason and at most one of them will develop into more than a body in a 25 through 30 roster spot.
That said, I’ve heard good stuff on various parts of the internet on three of these guys and am hoping for the best.
