Philadelphia Union Youth Technical Directort Alecko Eskandarian is the guest on the latest Philly Soccer Show podcast, co-hosted by KYW’s Greg Orlandini and the PSP’s Eli Pearlman-Storch. Eskandarian joins the pod by phone from the Dallas area, where he is traveling with the Union’s Academy team as they take part in the Generation Adidas Cup.
In part one, Eskandarian discusses running the academy and talks about some of the great play from the youngsters as they took part in the friendly against Everton. He also talks about the Union’s academy structure, what type of player the Union wants in their academy, and working USSF’s Claudio Reyna to develop a national playing style.
In part two, Greg and Eli look at the tough run of games the Union has coming up. Friday, they take on league champs Colorado Rapids at PPL Park, travel to Chicago next Wednesday and then face Houston at PPL Park next Saturday.
In part three, the hosts discuss the Union’s possible transfer moves. The team released goalkeeper Thorne Holder on Tuesday, clearing an international spot on the roster. Couple that with the money received for Jordan Harvey, and the team look poised to make a move.
In part four, Greg and Eli discuss the area’s other hot soccer team, the Philadelphia Independence. With their first home game since the Women’s World Cup on Sunday, the women of the Independence are looking to make a push for first place with the playoffs right around the corner.
