The Philadelphia Independence had a 2–1 road victory in their grasp going in to stoppage time on Wednesday night.
But Tina Ellertson of the Atlanta Beat found an equalizer in the 92nd minute three points on the road became one.
The slumping Atlanta has been rejuvenated by the acquisition of several former St. Louis Athletica players but it was 2009 expansion draftee Mami Yamaguchi who first put Atlanta on the board when she scored in the 14th minute with an assist from McCall Zerboni.
But in the 35th minute Amy Rodriguez equalized for Philadelphia with a looping shot over the head of Hope Solo.
The scoreline was soon 2–1 in favor of Philadelphia when Atlanta defender Stacy Bishop scored an own goal with a botched clearance attempt in first half stoppage time.
The Independence were outshot 8–3 in the match and coach Paul Riley was gracious in defeat. “Atlanta played well. Everyone wants to win at their home. We really didn’t deserve the win tonight. Atlanta came and scored that last goal and they deserved the win.”
Wednesday’s match was the third meeting between the two teams this season, all of which have ended as draws.
The Independence will end a string of three games in seven days when they return home to face Washington Freedom on Saturday at 6pm.
