Eastern PA Open Cup final on for this Sunday

The Eastern Pennsylvania Open Cup final between Phoenix SC and United German Hungarians has been rescheduled for this Sunday in Plymouth Meeting.

The winner moves on to advance to qualifiers in the U.S. Open Cup, the nation’s most prestigious knockout tournament, which was won this year by Major League Soccer’s Seattle Sounders.

Sunday’s game starts at 2 p.m. at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School on Germantown Pike, which is easily accessible from the Interstate highways that run through the area. Click here for a map and directions. (If you have no car, I’m told the #27 SEPTA bus stops within a half mile from the field.)

UGH and Phoenix were originally scheduled to play last week, but the weekend snowfall caused a cancellation. (For more on the match-up, click here.) These teams are among the best amateur teams eastern Pennsylvania has to offer, so it’s definitely a good way to spend two hours on a Sunday afternoon. Who knows? Maybe the winner can repeat a similar run last year by the Ocean City Barons, the PDL amateur team from New Jersey that went deep into the U.S. Open Cup before losing to eventual finalist D.C. United.

Thanks to Matt, one of our readers, for keeping us in the loop on this.

  1. Thanks for the update (rescheduled from week before) on the this game.

The game was hard fought and luckily, was played on field-turf at Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School…the rain was heavy, to say the least.
