PSP Seven-a-side Draft: Introduction

If you’re reading this, odds are good that two things are true.

First, that you care about the Philadelphia Union.

Second, that you’ve played a game or two of small-sided soccer in your life.

Last week, a group of PSP writers combined those two interests, drafting hypothetical seven-a-side teams from the Union’s all-time roster.

The participants (in order of draft position): Steve Holroyd, Tim Jones, Nick Fishman, Jim O’Leary, Peter Andrews, Jeremy Lane, Chris Gibbons

The rules

  • Each team drafts six field players, a keeper, and two substitutes.
  • Each drafter must pick a player from the Union’s all-time roster. (If you forget who’s on the all-time roster, I wrote a comprehensive and scientifically accurate ranking of every player as of August 1, 2017.)
  • Each player drafted is the “best version” of that player in their career, as defined by each drafter.
  • The drafter must then justify their picks on PSP.

We’ll be posting rosters and explanations throughout the week here on the site, starting later today with Steve’s squad.

Plus, if you’re a fan of Kevin Kinkead’s It’s Always Soccer in Philadelphia podcast, Chris will be participating in a draft over there tonight.
