It’s been a week of stunning news in world soccer. Meanwhile, the Women’s World Cup is about to get underway, and the Union are starting a two-game homestand.
In the latest edition of the KYW Philly Soccer Show, KYW’s Greg Orlandini and PSP’s Eli Pearlman-Storch are joined by PSP’s Mike Servedio.
First, the guys tackle the biggest story in the sport: The resignation of FIFA president Sepp Blatter.
Blatter, who was re-ected to a fifth term as FIFA president on Friday, only two days after leading FIFA officials were arrested in Zurich in connection to an investigation into corruption at the world’s soccer governing body stretching back into the 1990s, announced on Tuesday that he will step down as president pending a new election.
Greg, Eli,and Mike discuss where FIFA goes from here.
The guys then preview the Women’s World Cup, which kicks off this week in Canada. The US opens the tournament on Monday against Australia.
The guys then discuss the Union, who looked close to earning a point in Washington on Saturday only to see those hopes slip away after some questionable refereeing led to a 2-1 loss against DC United.
The Union now host Columbus on Wednesday night before NYCFC visits on Saturday.
