Philadelphians Abroad: Warshaw looks for a fresh start in Sweden

Mechanicsburg, PA native and FC Dallas midfielder Bobby Warshaw was loaned to Swedish side Ängelholms FF last Tuesday.

The 24 year old was Dallas’s first-round pick in the 2011 MLS Super Draft, going 17th overall. Warshaw appeared in 17 games as a rookie, but his sophomore year in MLS was cut short by a foot injury, allowing him to see the field just six times. With only eight appearances and one MLS start this season, the team has been exploring loan options for Warshaw after he expressed his unhappiness with the amount of playing time was receiving to both FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman and club technical director Fernando Clavijo several weeks ago.

On July 29, Clavijo said of the situation, “Bobby wasn’t happy with the amount of time that he was getting, so we’re trying to find him a team to loan him [to]. We’re doing that and I just thought it was a good idea to get him focused because I need everybody here focused on the team.” He went on to say, “He came to coach and he came to me that he wasn’t happy and I understood. I understood. Everybody wants to play, but we need to look at what is better for the team. The coach didn’t have him in his plan at the time and I said let’s find him a place. If he’s not happy, I always say then we need to find places for these kids to play. He’s one of them.”

Since then, Warshaw had been left out of all first-team activities, including regular trainings and games as well as a Meet The Team event held at the team’s stadium. Warshaw was also the only current member of the team’s roster left off FCD’s Raise Your Red promotional materials for their 2014 season ticket campaign.

Warshaw’s last league appearance came in Dallas’s 2-2 draw against Philadelphia at PPL Park on June 29 when he came on for the final 28 minutes of the match. While Warshaw did not make the game day roster for Ängelholms FF’s game this weekend, he hopes to join fellow American and former Portland Timbers goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski on the pitch soon. Warshaw will also serve as one of Philadelphia’s two representatives in the Swedish Superettan, at least until Billy Schuler finds his way out of Hammarby.
