Philadelphia Union

The Union fell to the league’s uncompromising narrative, giving Ibrahimovic a goal and penalty kick of dubious credibility, eventually losing 2-0 to the LA Galaxy.

Auston Trusty received a second yellow card during the game, meaning next Saturday against Montreal will be the first game he has missed since becoming a Union starter.

  1. I’d like to see Kacper get a run with the boys in blue. Seven games in and I’m asking why not? Honestly thought we’d see him in LA after Curtin talked him up in last week’s presser.

    • Came off after 70 Saturday night. Probably needs more USL minutes for fitness, but you are absolutely correct that he took two goal opportunities that simply had to be taken. The sad part is that the easiest chance of all, about the 47th minute or thereabouts he headed over the bar. Coulda had a hat trick.

      • Isn’t Kacper the Union player on a season long loan to Steel for roster compliance?
        .
I can’t recall if that means he can only be called back to the first team under “extreme hardship” or what other roster moves would be needed.
        .
It seems the existing strategy was to loan him for the season then rotate short term loans with other international players as needed week to week.

  2. Anyone see Kaku’s shot into the stands getting him a red card? Thought it was worse than Cantona’s kong-fu kick years ago. Kaku should be suspended for months.

    .
Glad I went to sleep early on Saturday. 3 min highlights on the MLS app were enough for me.

    • Saw that. Similar to a stunt Messi pulled against Madrid in 2011. Blasted the ball into the stands — quite on purpose — drilling a fan in the head. A real stupid move on Kaku’s part.

    • Another one leaves the nest. Marisa Pilla moves up from local Union broadcast to FS1 last night for the NYRB v SKC game. Must be something in the press booth water.

what was wrong with Cantona’s kung fu kick?

people, fans and players alike have had to learn the hard way —not to fuck with Frenchmen.

“penalty kick of dubious credibility”… such homerism.
    .
Wagner undercuts him. Has the author of said article been listening to Tommy Smith a bit too much.
    .
As for the first goal… whatever. He’s one of the greatest strikers ever almost 6 1/2 feet tall 200 lbs. Trusty got used.

    • Andy Muenz says:

Wagner undercut him after he pushed off on Trusty. It was clearly a close enough question that the VAR suggested that the on field ref take a second look.
      .
To me the real question is whether Cory Burke would have been called for a foul on either play if he was the one heading the ball at the other end.

    • I hate the “MLS has it in for us” narrative.
it’s silly to think they even care.

      • Andy Muenz says:

I’m not saying they have it in for us. I don’t think anyone else on LA gets the same call on the PK. I think refs have a tendency to give guys like Zlatan and Rooney the benefit of the calls just like Jordan used to get in the NBA.

    • I don’t think it’s MLS favoritism, but I still think it was a crap call. And the VAR review…. which probably would normally be a disadvantage to LA if Zlatan were a human being who ever felt pressure…. was something else, though long video reviews just set me off in general.

I think Zlatan’s shove off of Trusty for the first goal might have been called a foul, though the more I watch it, his hands on the back look less a lift off than just the point at which he clatters into the center back.

  4. Congrats to Marsh.
    .
Ultimately a very smart career move leaving a successful head coaching gig in MLS to become an assistant/apprentice at a top-four Bundesliga team.
    .
Opened the door for him in Europe as a head coach with, importantly, a situation in which he can succeed (unlike Bradley’s “chance” at Swansea).
