News roundup: Union win and Deuce peaces out

Philadelphia Union

The Union took three points from D.C. United last night.

Local, D.C., and national coverage.

Haris Medunjanin took some orange slices off them too.

The win is the Union’s fifth in a row, a club record littered with other impressive milestones.

Also the Union started the early stages of a mascot reveal. My money is on halftime on the Sept. 15 vs. Montreal for the reveal.

Local

Some African perspective on Lucky Mkosana of Penn FC’s call up to the Zimbabwean National Team.

MLS

Kyle Martino is working on something#SaveTheCrew?

Last night’s other game saw the Red Bulls move into first place with a clean 1-0 victory over a Dynamo that’s fading fast.

Effective immediately, Clint Dempsey is retiring from professional soccer. He leaves the game tied for most goals scored for both Seattle Sounders and the US Men’s National Team.

Minnesota is building excitement faster than it’s building Allianz Field, not just for the team but for what the stadium will do for it’s neighborhood in St. Paul.

When a regular player touches someone’s face it’s an automatic red card (and resulting one game suspension). When Zlatan does it, it’s just a fine.

US Soccer

Josh Sargent scored for Werder Bremen II, and his dad got footage of it on the Internet before the team did.

Growing pains should be expected as the sport grows in this country, but that doesn’t mean this isn’t something to be concerned about.

Why only “top three” though? If you’re going to blow smoke, blow better smoke.

World

Seriously though, did La Liga talk to anyone before taking this stupid idea public?

Frustrated with a three goal drought, Pierre Aubameyang is working on a positional change.

  1. Re: that USL story… There’s something the US Soccer Federation can do for the sport with all that surplus cash we keep hearing about. Provide really good medical insurance for pros in lower divisions. Can’t be hard to get good rates for a bunch of healthy young men and women, even if they are likely more prone to injuries than the average young person. And make sure they get good coverage if they have to leave the game — cut from a club or retire and change careers. Let the clubs focus their own funds on better salaries and other investments.

“Fatigued DC United lose to Union” says the lead….
    .
Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Union play 2 games in 4 days, 3 in 8 in store?
    .
More like….” DC United get asses beat by knives in a gun fight”

Well hell…. is it Saturday yet?

    • Andy Muenz says:

Union played Saturday and then had short trip from Philly to DC. DC played Sunday and had long trip from Harrison to DC. Other than that, DC played a midweek game 2 weeks ago when Philly was off but Union played the open cup game 3 weeks ago when United was off. So not a huge amount of difference. (Union also had a trip to the west coast early in the month whereas DC’s longest trip in August was to Montreal.)

Pretty much right on. I for one like my news lead much better than the one I read earlier today ‘on the line.’

  3. Hey folks, did anyone notice; competition fans look for excuses when they lose. Union fans look for negatives when they win. Buck up guys. You’re gonna’ survive this win streak.

    • As Mike Schmidt said, “In Philadelphia, you can experience the thrill of victory on one day, and the agony of reading about it on the next.”
