NCAA Division III

Division III men’s soccer roundup: Upsets, blowouts and more

This week’s edition sees the addition of the NJAC to the weekly roundup. If you aren’t seeing a team or conference you want included, comment below. Last week’s games were filled with upsets, blowouts, and action-packed matches.

Capital Athletic Conference

Complete conference standings

York (Pa.): Despite outshooting Susquehanna 15-10, No. 4 York College lost 1-0. A Kyle Semmel in the 74′ accounted for the lone goal. The Spartans are now 4-1-0 on the season.

Wesley: Off a penalty kick, Sheldon Blue put Wesley up 1-0 right before half-time. However, Neumann equalized in the 85′ for the 1-1 draw. Vince Cortese found the open net.

Penn State Harrisburg: After losing two straight, the Nittany Lions earned a much-needed “W”. With goals from Babajide Obusola and Jon Willingham, Penn St. blanked Delaware Valley 2-0.

Centennial Conference

Dickinson: Behind Derek Kachadurian’s one goal and two assist effort, Dickinson defeated Alvernia 3-0. Drew Carneal and Isaac Pitkow also added their own tallies.

Franklin and Marshall: It was a defensive game between F&M and Elizabethtown. Despite having 17 corner kicks to the Blue Jays one, the Diplomats could only manage seven shots. The game ended in a scoreless draw.

Swarthmore: After going down 1-0 to Nazereth seven minutes in, three different players led Swarthmore to a 3-1 victory.

Haverford: Behind four first-half goals, Haverford defeated Rosemont 5-1.

Ursinus: Three second-half goals led the Bears past Rosemont 3-0.

Commonwealth Conference

Messiah: No. 1 Messiah stayed perfect on the season. Josh Wood and Jeremy Payne put Messiah up 2-0 before Catholic found one goal of their own. In the end, Messiah defeated Catholic 2-1.

Lebanon Valley: Even though LVC managed to out-corner Moravian 17-2, the Dutchmen failed to score. Both teams held for a 0-0 tie.

Albright: It took awhile for the scoring to start in their game against Berkley (NJ), but it ended in dramatic fashion. With Berkley being up 2-1 after a 76′ goal, Albright scored goals at the 87:14 and 89:30 mark. It looked like Albirght was on their way to victory, however, Berkley scored right before the final whistle. Less than three minutes into the overtime session, Albright scored the golden goal. In the end, Albright came out on top 4-3.

Lycoming: Adam Kuntz scored the game-winner as the Warriors defeated Westminster College 1-0.

Alvernia: The Crusaders fell to No. 12 Dickinso 3-0.

Widener: Max Reid and Malik Kric scored twice as the Pride humbled D’Youville 7-0.

Arcadia: A late Misercordia goal dealt Arcadia a 1-0 loss and dropped them to 2-3-1 on the season.

Elizabethtown: The Blue Jays kept No. 25 F&M scoreless in a 0-0 tie and keeper Rodrigo Barrera earned Commonwealth Goalkeeper/Defender of the Week honors.

Freedom Conference

Eastern: The Eagles defeated cross street rivals Cabrini College 1-0. Benjamin Barnhart scored the game-winning goal in the 75th minute.

Misericordia: Freshman Chris Edkins’ first career goal lifted the Cougars past Arcadia 1-0.

Wilkes: Five different players scored in Wilkes’ 5-1 victory over Baptist Bible.

Delaware Valley: The Aggies three-game winning streak was snapped as they lost 2-0 to Penn-St. Harrisburg.

Desales: Behind three first-half goals, the Bulldogs won their second-straight game and defeated Immaculata 3-0.

Landmark Conference

Juniata: Freshman Dani Meyer-Arrivillaga scored his third goal of the season. The Eagles tied King’s College 1-1.

Scranton: After taking the lead in the 73rd minute, Johns Hopkins would tie Scranton moments later. Scranton would find the game-winning goal with less than two minutes to go in the second overtime. Bill McGuiness scored his fifth goal on the season and lead Scranton to a 2-1 victory.

Susquehanna: Kyle Semmel’s low shot stood to be the game-winner. Susquehanna defeated York 1-0 for the upset victory.

Catholic: The Eagles defense couldn’t contain defending champions Messiah College and fell 2-1. Ian Smith scored the Eagles’ lone goal.

Moravian: Their defense bunkered down and withstood LVC’s 17 shots. In the end, the game ended in a 0-0 tie.

New Jersey Athletic Conference

Complete conference standings

Rutgers-Camden-  In defeating Salisbury University 2-1, Rutgers is off to a program’s best 7-0-0.

Richard Stockton The Ospreys continued their four-game unbeaten streak with a come from behind a 5-5 tie against FDU-Florham. Stockton never saw the lead in this game, but found a way to come tie the game on four separate occasions.

Rowan- 6-0. Senior forward Dylan Smith had two goals and two assists on the night.

Noteworthy National News

D3Soccer.com’s latest rankings come out later today.

NSCAA release this week’s rankings Tuesday as well. The Sept. 17th edition of their rankings show starts at 1 p.m. Additionally NSCAA TV will be showcasing two Division III soccer matches this week. On Wednesday, they will be streaming the Ohio Wesleyan-Ohio Northern match. Their second Division III match will feature Saturday’s Messiah College-Montclair St. University match. Both matches and more information can be found here. From what I have been told, each match will feature four high definition HD camera angles.

  1. Hey, Phil, I write the d12 boys column- if you ever get a chance to talk to these coaches- do they recruit at the Thanksgiving Classic All Star games at Eastern? I’m interested in where they are looking.

      KenZolo- I know Messiah recruits heavily through their multiple soccer summer camps and from alums who are coaching in various schools and states. But they also allow interested players to send in information. Personally, I do not know what tournaments they recruit at or if they even do.

      I am not familiar with that All Star game, but I would presume that some of the coaches probably come to it.
