Local Division III roundup for Week Two

As results in conference play begin to pile up, the format of this post is changing.

Starting this week, conferences are organized by the order of standings. Click on the full conference standings to see the big picture as we’re only providing a quick snapshot with a local perspective. If you have ideas on how this post can be better formatted, please let me know in the comment section below.

Capital Athletic Conference

Complete Conference Standings

York (Pa.): Second-half goals from Chris Weaver and Jake Hower completed a 2-1 come from behind victory against Penn State Abington. Four days later, York traveled to Alvernia University and left with a 3-0 win behind goals from Brendan Saberton, Chris Weaver, and Taylor Brummit. York is now 4-0 on the season.

Wesley: Behind Will Mileski and Danny Ramirez’s two-goal performances, Wesley rolled over Bryn Athyn 8-0. Danny Ramirez’s first-half goal was enough when Wesley defeated Penn State Abington 1-0. With the two-game win streak, Wesley improves to 2-2-1.

Penn State Harrisburg: Behind seven different goal scorers, Penn St. rolled over Valley Forge Christian 9-0. Their luck wouldn’t continue into their next two game as Penn State was unable to find an equalizer against Mt. Aloysisu and fell 1-0 before losing to Albright College 2-1. The Nittany Lions goal against Albright came off an own goal.

Centennial Conference

Dickinson: Alred Hylton-Dei’s 109th minute overtime strike lifted the Red Devils past Carnegie Mellon 2-1. Three different scorers and two assist by Derek Kachadurian led Dickinson past Rochester Tech 3-0. Dickinson improves to 4-0-0.

Franklin and Marshall: F&M traveled to Oneonta State for a weekend set of games. In their first match against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Ben Beaver’s hat-trick lifted F&M past Claremount 4-0. The Diplomats kept their hot start going with a 1-0 victory against Oneonta St. thanks to a Zach Fried goal. They improve to 4-0-0 on the season.

Swarthmore: Alec McClean’s first career goal was the difference against Widener in the 1-0 victory.

Muhlenberg: Chris Royer’s goal in the second period of overtime lifted Muhlenberg over Ithaca 1-0. Jeff Riehart’s two goals off of two Lance Dotzman assists led Muhlenberg over Moravian 4-0.

Haverford: After going down a goal against Vassar, Haverford came away victorious thanks to an overtime goal from Ford Borhrmann for a 2-1 victory. In the following game, Haverford would go up 1-0 over Kean only to give away the lead and lose 2-1.

Ursinus: After being tied 1-1, Ursinus conceded two unanswered goals to Vasser and lost 3-1. Scranton then proved to be too much and defeated Ursinus 2-0. With the back-to-back losses, Ursinus falls to 1-4-0 on the season.

Gettysburg: The Bullets went down in the third minute against Neuman University and could never come back, losing 3-1. Parker Delmolino accounted for Gettysburg’s lone goal. Things wouldn’t get easier for the Bullets when they headed to No. 1 Messiah, who would go up 5-0 before Brooks Taylor put Gettysburg on the board. 5-1 was the scoreline in the lightening-shortened game that ended with 8:45 left in the game.

Commonwealth Conference

Messiah: No. 1 Messiah headed up to Oneonta State for games against the hosts and Claremount-Mudd-Scripps and came away victorious from both. It took until the extra session, but Josh Wood’s header put Messiah past Oneonta 2-1. The Falcons had no issues against Claremount, winning 3-0. After two road games, Messiah hosted Gettysburg and dispatched them 5-1.

Lebanon Valley: After playing two home games to open up their season, LVC played three-straight home games. The Dutchmen defeated Cabrini College 3-0 behind two separate goal scorers and an own goal. A day later LVC suffered their first loss against Eastern 3-2. Cam Alexander had two assists in the last minute loss. LVC responded from the Sept. 7 loss with a 3-1 victory against Eastern Mennonite. Freshman Ian McGinnis scored his second and third goals on the season.

Albright: After losing 3-0 and 5-1 to Richard Stockton and William Paterson respectively, Albright earned their third win of the young season when they defeated Penn State Harrisburg 2-1.

Alvernia: The Crusaders fell to Eastern 2-0 on Friday night before defeating Cabrini College 2-1 on a 89th minute game-winner from RJ Fisher. Alvernia then lost to York College 3-0.

Arcadia: In the Rutgers Tournament, the Lions defeated Cairn 1-0 thanks to a goal from Dan Search. Rutgers then proved to be too much for Arcadia, who lost 5-0. Arcadia recovered from that defeat with a strong 6-0 win over Immaculata. Six different Arcadia players scored in the game.

Lycoming: The Warriors outscored their opponents 14-1 thanks to a 5-0 win against Pitt-Bradford and a 9-1 victory against Penn St. York. Five different players scored against Pitt-Bradford, while Lycoming scored its eighth win in a decade against Penn St.

Widener: Sophomore Tory Remondelli netted his fourth goal in four games against Marywood in a 1-1 tie. Widener went down early against Wilkes and never could recover, losing 3-0. Widener then took on Centennial Conference foe Swarthmore but fell 1-0.

Elizabethtown: Things aren’t going the Blue Jays’ way in their final year in the Commonwealth Conference. Andrew Sandridge’s first career goal wasn’t enough when the Blue Jays fell to RIT 2-1. Etown then lost 1-0 to Carnegie Mellon after a misplayed pass led to the game’s only score.

Freedom

Complete Conference Standings

Eastern: Goals by Justin Lee and Jai Saenz pushed Eastern passed Alvernia 2-0. Brandon Beaumont’s 86th minute goal led the Eagles past LVC 3-2. Eastern had their fair amount of chances against Rutgers-Camden, but fell in a 5-0 loss.

Misericordia: David Malaquias’ two-goal performance helped the Cougars defeat Baptist Bible 4-0.

Wilkes: Junior Eric McAnena score twice as Wilkes got by Stevenson 2-1. McAnena scored one of Wilkes’ three goals against Widener in their 3-0 victory.

Delaware Valley: Max Drummond’s two-goal performance helped lift Delaware Valley over Penn State Hazleton 5-0. Steve Mannato scored twice as DelVal earned their second-straight shutout and 2-0 win against Keystone.

Desales: The Bulldogs lost two consecutive games — 3-0 and 6-0 against Drew University and Rutgers-Newark, respectively — before earning their first win against Cabrini, 2-1. Wes Frebel and Brett Morris scored in the victory.

Landmark

Full Conference Standings

Juniata: The Eagles defeated D’Youville 2-0 and Medaille 2-1. Aaron Kulid scored one goal in each game.

Scranton: Bill McGuiness’ two-goal effort lifted Scranton over St. John Fisher 2-1. He also scored in Scranton’s 2-0 shutout against Ursinus.

Susquehanna: Three different players scored as Susquehanna defeated Penn State Altoona 3-1.

Catholic: Nico Bartolomeo’s 76th minute equalizer earned Catholic a 1-1 tie against Washington and Lee. Bartolomeo was again the hero with his 66th minute goal in Catholic’s 1-0 victory over Mary Washington.

Moravian: Senior Jeffrey Algor’s two goals led the Greyhounds to a 2-1 victory against Immaculata. Muhlenburg then defeated Moravian 4-0 behind two Jeff Reinhart goals.

Noteworthy National News

D3Soccer.com’s first 2013 season Top-25 rankings are out for both men’s and women’s soccer.

The second NSCAA rankings were released this week on both the men’s and women’s side. NSCAA’s latest ranking show can be seen here. Division III coverage begins at the 22:39 mark.

  1. Can we include the NJAC in this round up of local conferences? You have schools in the tri-state area that should be mentioned including Rutgers-Camden, Stockton, and Rowan. Rutgers – Camden is nationally ranked and currently off to a 5-0 start.
