Philadelphians Abroad: Allen relegated, Vuolo starts, locals score in U.S. Open Cup

With many of Europe’s football leagues wrapping up their seasons comes the unfamiliar-to-most-Americans drama of promotion and relegation where a leagues’ top clubs seek glory at a higher level of play, while those finishing at the bottom of the heap are cast into a lower league. One local witnessed this drama first hand last week in Danish First Division.

Coming off of a 2-0 loss to Brönshöj Boldklub on Thursday, Old Bridge, NJ native R.J. Allen found himself and his Skive IK teammates in a relegation battle heading into their last game of the season on Monday. In 11th place of 12 teams, Skive IK could climb free of the relegation zone with a win over Hobro, provided that fellow basement dwellers AB, who were tied on points but had the goal differential edge, did not win their game as well. Skive held up their end of the bargain, beating AB 4-3, but unfortunately for Allen, AB prevailed in their match as well. While Skive IK will move down to the Danish 2nd Division, the fate of Allen is up in the air.  After joining the team following their winter break, Allen found himself on the field 13 times, starting nearly every game since signing with the club.

In other locals news:

  • Downingtown, PA native Jeremy Vuolo made his first start for the San Antonio Scorpions of the NASL. In Saturday’s 3-1 win over Ft. Lauderdale, Vuolo made 5 saves and allowed 1 goal. Vuolo claimed the starting spot from fellow Philadelphia native Pat Hannigan who in the first four games of the season allowed 10 goal without earning a single clean sheet.
  • Three locals scored goals in last week’s U.S. Open Cup action. Darius Madison and Steve Neumann posted goals in Reading United A.C.’s 2-0 win over Lehigh Valley United Sonic, while Frank Tweneboa scored for Ocean City Nor’easters in their own 2-0 win over the New York Red Bulls U-23s.
