Philadelphians Abroad: Hertzog breaks locals’ scoring drought

Philadelphia area players have been in a bit of a drought this season when it has come to scoring. Throughout the first five weeks of the new season, not a single one of our locals had scored a goal, and only one (Mr. Antoine Hoppenot) had provided an assist. That changed this weekend, and the goal came from a somewhat unlikely source, Reading’s own Corey Hertzog.

Prior to Saturday’s game against San Jose, Hertzog had played only 1 minute in MLS since the beginning of the 2012 season (yes, 1 minute!). This is despite being selected 13th overall by New York on a Generation Adidas contract in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and then having a head-turning time on loan with the USL Pro’s Wilmington Hammerheads last year, scoring 9 goals and providing 5 assists in 17 games. After being released by New York last November, Hertzog signed with Vancouver in January. Starting the first four games of the season on the Whitecaps bench, Hertzog was called upon to start for Vancouver against San Jose, and he didn’t disappoint. Serving as the focal point of the Vancouver attack, Hertzog’s goal came at an opportune time when a poorly orchestrated bout of shoe changing (I kid you not) left the Earthquakes temporarily down two men. While it may not have been the most glorious goal in the world, a goal’s a goal, and our region’s players are back on the board (and for his effort’s, Hertzog’s been name PSP’s Player of the week).

In other news, another local, Jeff Larentowicz, provided a late assist in Chicago’s 3-1 win over New York. We all hate the Red Bulls.

Off in the Kingdom of Sweden, Montreal Impact loanee and Lancaster, PA native Zarek Valentin started in his first game for FK Bodø/Glimt, playing 90 minutes in Sunday’s 3-1 win over Ullensaker/Kisa IL.

Finally, former Philadelphia Union player and Swarthmore man Morgan Langley provided Harrisburg’s only goal in their 5-1 preseason loss to University of Maryland.\
