Eastern PA US Open Cup qualifying semifinals set

The semifinals of the USASA Region I Eastern Pennsylvania US Open Cup tournament are set after Sunday’s quarterfinal round saw three high-scoring games and one game decided on penalty kicks after extra time.

West Chester Majors defeated Quakertown 4–0 and will host Cavalla FC, who defeated Salone 4–0. Predators advances to the semifinals after defeating Nether united 5–4 on penalty kicks after a scoreless 120 minutes of play. They will go on the road to face United German Hungarian Majors, who defeated Junior Lone Star 3–0.

The semifinals will take place Sunday, Dec. 9 with kickoffs scheduled for 2pm.

The USASA will send nine teams to the Open Cup tournament, founded in 1914 as the National Challenge Cup and the oldest national soccer tournament in the US. In 2011, Phoenix SC became the third team from Eastern Pennsylvania in the Pro Era to represent Region I in the Open Cup tournament, following Vereinigung Erzgebirge (1999) and United German Hungarians (2002). In the first round of the tournament, they fell 2–1 to Rochester Rhinos.

In 2012, Jersey Shore Boca, former club of Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Chris Konopka, became the first USASA team from New Jersey in the Pro Era to reach the first round of the US Open Cup where they were defeated 6–0 by PDL side Michigan Bucks.

United German Hungarians finished runners up in the Open Cup in 1977 and 1993.
