Philadelphians Abroad: Reserves take center stage

Since Philadelphia area players around the world are taking the week off for the international break, you might think there wouldn’t be much to read about this week. Thanks to a pair of reserve league games this week, however, there were a few instances where our local lads shown brightly over the last seven days.

Last Tuesday the Philadelphia Union Reserves squared off against their D.C. United counterparts in the first game of a home-and-away series. Many of our region’s up-and-comers would feature in a match in which the Union Reserves thumped DC 6-0.  Among those taking the field were Chris Ramirez of PA Classics, Billy McConnell of the PDA, and FC DELCO product Kenny Lassiter (who would provide a 90th minute assist), as well as all three of Philadelphia’s Homegrown Players.

Zach Pfeffer opened up the book for the three HGP’s in the 56th minute when he provided an assist on Chandler Hoffman’s second goal. Not to be outdone by Pfeffer, Jimmy McLaughlin scored a goal of his own in the 61st minute and provided and assist on Josue Martinez’s in the 80th. Meanwhile, Medford, NJ’s Stephan King lined up as captain for the D.C. United Reserves.

All seven of the locals would meet again in Friday’s grudge match. This time the DC would prove the 1-0 victors, thanks to an 8th minute goal by King, which was assisted by Harrisburg City Islander striker Yann Ekra who was listed as a trialist for DC.
