He’s gone from the end of the bench to become the embodiment of the resurgent Philadelphia Union. And now Union forward Jack McInerney is the guest on this week’s KYW Philly Soccer Show podcast.

In part one, KYW’s Greg Orlandini and special guest host Kerith Gabriel of the Philadelphia Daily News and 610 WIP’s 90th Minute radio show with the young Union striker.

McInerney was the hero of last Sunday’s game, scoring a last-minute game winner at PPL Park versus the New England Revolution. But he started the year in (former) coach Peter Nowak’s doghouse, seeing very little playing time and some weeks not even making the game day roster.

Under new coach John Hackworth, however, McInerney has blossomed, racking up four goals since June 16th and reviving his young career.

McInerney reveals to us how close he was to leaving the team, frustrated as he was with his lack of playing time and the lack of communication with Nowak.

In part two, Kerith and Greg preview Saturday’s match against the Montreal Impact. The Canadian team is coming off a big 3-1 win against the New York Red Bulls and sit four points ahead of the Union, in 7th place.

We also look at some of the players on the Union. While McInerney has stepped up his game since Hackworth has taken over, others like Keon Daniel and Gabriel Gomez are struggling to find their place.

We also talk about the enigma that is Freddy Adu. Left off the roster against New York two weeks ago, he returned in the game against New England, scoring on a penalty kick.
