Union wins $50k for Chester & more news

The Union have won the $50,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant for the Chester City United soccer organization. The money will be used to build a full-sized grass soccer field for the Chester Upland School District. The award was determined based upon fan voting so, if you took the few seconds took to vote, give yourself a pat on the back—you did good.

Nationaly ranked Penn men’s team got a reality slap with a 1–0 home loss to Villanova on Friday night. Villanova continued its winning ways with a 2–0 win over Princeton on Sunday. On Friday, Princeton drew 1–1 with Georgetown. Penn bounced back from its loss on Friday by beating Georgetown 3–1 on Sunday. Stephen Baker’s two goals in that match earned him Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors for the second time in three weeks.

Penn drops three spots to 25th in the NSCAA national rankings while Penn State moves up three spots to 20th.

Drexel women’s team lost 3–1 to George Washington.

Lehigh University women’s team defender Leah Kulp was named Patriot League Player of the Week.

Widener’s double header at PPL Park last Friday kicked off with a 1–0 win for the women’s team over Wilkes. The men battled to a 2–2 tie with Neumann in a match that went to double overtime, whatever that is.

Whatever it means, it’s catching. West Chester lost 1–0 to Philadelphia University after “double overtime,” also. Philadelphia University scored three second-half goals to beat Goldey-Beacom 3–1 on Tuesday.

Holy Christmas, it’s afflicted La Salle, too, as they draw 4–4 with Niagara, their third straight “double overtime” game!

This week’s Inquirer rankings are in. For Southeastern Pennsylvania, La Salle are the number one ranked boys team. In New Jersey, St. Augustine are number one for boys, Lenape are number one for girls.

Bucks County’s Conwell-Egan Catholic’s boys team lost 2–1 to Arch Bishop Ryan last Thursday after four of its players were issued red cards for fighting.
